I wish they would have kept Smoltz. How much money would they have had to give him to keep him?

Braves wouldn't have had to sign him to that, but they gave him an even lower offer and he felt he deserved more than that.

He hasn't done anything yet.

How did they handle the Smoltz situation poorly? They chose not to exercise a $12M option on a guy that threw 28 innings last year and hasn't thrown an inning in the majors yet this season.

 

They gave Glavine a chance and decided he wasn't going to help them. Again, what are they supposed to do? Throw him a going-away party?

 

Think what you want but the fact of the matter is that the Braves organization has changed a lot since the days of Ted Turner and even John S. The Braves are moving on and letting go of the past but it seems the way they are doing it is not the way you go about treating icons.

Like I said, I'm perfectly fine with the Braves releasing Glavine, because I feel the Braves have younger pitchers who can be just as productive. I just don't agree with how they handled the whole situation with both Glavine and Smoltz.

He's thrown a grand total of 3 1/3 innings above the low-Class A level ... that wouldn't be the case if he was ready to be back on a major league roster two weeks ago.

Maybe Glavine but I disagree with Smoltz.

 

Smoltz is like Chipper Jones when it comes to loyalty to one team and numerous times Smoltz could have left the Braves for teams like the Yankees or Dodgers for a lot more money but opted to stay with the Braves for a fraction of the money he was offered. Now, that's not to say that he didn't have good contracts with the Braves but Smoltz was the one pitcher that should have retired with the Braves.

 

Glavine, I'm fine with, he is well past his prime and has been for the last few years, I just believe the Braves should have released him a month or two ago during his setback.

Yes, he did and thereafter said he regretted it, which came out in a book, a while back.

 

But what I'm simply saying is that this wasn't a spur of the moment decision by the Braves. They realized their mistakes (leaving Schafer in the majors way too long, signing Glavine, etc.) and now they are trying to right them.

Glavine never should have been signed this season. For that matter, he never should have been signed the previous one. I don't like the way the Braves did this, but the mistake was made earlier, this just compounded it.

Even you said he was offered a chance to return to the Braves ... Smoltz was the one that opted to part ways.

Right, and I have said over and over I agree with them releasing Glavine and demoting Schafer but in my opinion they way they handled it with Glavine was disrespectful.
