May 25, 200917 yr Rules are rules. The rules state that if you fail a drug test then you must sit out one full year from the date of the test. Just because it is a rule doesn't mean it is a good rule. I dont think the NFL overtime rule is a good one. I think it should be changed. Same with the Jarmon ruling.

Completely different situation. If the NCAA were to go easy on Jarmon, it would open the door to a lot of things they don't need to deal with. They guy made a mistake and must face the penalty.

They guy made a mistake and must face the penalty. What exactly would they have to deal with? He 100% made a mistake, but a guy smokes weed and gets a 2 game suspension. Im not understanding the NCAA's thought process on situations like this. What would you have done in this situation?

If the NCAA does the testing and finds weed in a guy's system they have the same penalty as Jarmon. Any substance abuse is a year penalty. If they bend the rules for one guy...then every positive test after this will want to bend the rules.
May 26, 200917 yr I hate the NCAA... The more I think about the situation the mader I get... NCAA cares not about its athletes IMO, A friend of mine played in the SEC Ole Miss, he was one of the top 10 Tight end prospects (projected in his Junior year) he decided to stay his senior year play and pass up the early money. He broke his leg severely in the 3rd or so game his senior year, was not granted a medical year to recover and play. IMO he got screwed. At some point in time the NCAA is obligated to pay back the kids when bad things happen.
May 26, 200917 yr See this is what kills me. The papers and press will just say the player used a "banned substance" and it paints them in a horrible picture when half the time these "banned substances" are things you can get at GNC or CVS. I think the NCAA and all of pro sports needs to change their rules on alot of what they ban; it's garbage. Hell Mark McGuires record is tainted because of CREATINE!!! That's just dumb. I'm sorry but this just irritates me. . Mark Mcgwire's record is tainted because of Androstenatine (sp?), not Creatine. Also, his performance in front of Congress did not go over well for him. If the NCAA does the testing and finds weed in a guy's system they have the same penalty as Jarmon. Any substance abuse is a year penalty. If they bend the rules for one guy...then every positive test after this will want to bend the rules. I think it is a consistent ruling. Unfortunate, but consistent. Hopefully Jarmon will land on an NFL roster. He's a great kid & a pretty good football player.
May 27, 200917 yr My understanding, as limited as it is, is that certain things(while not performance enhancing) are taken to mask things that are performance enhancing. I obviously don't know if that was the case here. I spoke to an individual inside the Marshall University athletic dept yesterday and he said athletes are told to NEVER take anything not approved by the team trainers/personnel. I am certain UK has the same policy. That being said I do really hate this situation both for JJ and UK, I am a season ticket holder.
May 28, 200917 yr The rule is in place to keep people from getting a competitive advantage. He said it was a new years resolution to loose weight. I know it's tough to look at things as a case by case issue but to end his college career is ridiculous IMO. The NCAA should be ashamed for stealing a great kids SR season that has gone out and represented them in the upmost way. He made a mistake but not one that should cost him his last year of football! HUGE loss for the CATS! I think the NCAA needs to take a look at the rule.
