Does this mean I can have 2 wives? Don't know how well a Lady would go for that.

While the free republic is not always the best of writing, the point expressed I agree with: those who defend homosexual civil unions in my opinion cannot also rationally oppose polygamist unions, or, for that matter, unions between homosexual man-child relationships, or even bestial unions. Logic is sort of funny that way.

I agree with the logic behind this but not all the examples. A relationship involving a minor is COMPLETELY different since one party is clearly being taken advantage of. Also, I guess you could argue that in a bestial union the beast is being taken advantage of as well.

Though, I have zero issues with a polygamist union.

Me neither, If I could marry Jessica Alba and Eva Longoria I'd do it today.

Marry? You must have had a better experience with marriage than I did.

It's quite a leap from a "civil union" to the rest of your examples.

Red herring alert ...

Don't think so. The same justification that is posited for civil unions can be posited for polygamist unions. Show me how the two are different.

A "civil union" can easily be restricted to two people, both consenting adults, just as a legal marriage is.

Well, by definition of course it can, just as a legal marriage can by definition be restricted to a man and a woman if we so chose.

What proponents of civil unions argue, however, is that it should not be reasonable to so define it that way and penalize same-sex couples from having rights under the law because their relationship is just as valid and they should not be denied the rights that heterosexual couples are granted. How is their relationship any more valid than polygamist couples? Why should polygamist couples be denied those same rights? I'm really looking for your answer here.

I'm not advocating polygamist unions, so look elsewhere. Bottom line ... using this kind of stuff as an argument against civil unions is simply to get people fired up against it.

What is the difference between allowing one union between consenting adults and not allowing another?

While logic can be used to say its hard to be for civil unions between same sex couples but not "triads" its absurd to make the leap that such rights would lead to man-child or bestial relationships. That's nothing more than scare tactics.

I think I could bite the bullet for something of that caliber. :thumb:
