I was curious as to your responses, particularly of my fellow Christians in the Catholic church.

 

Is this an opportunity missed, much to do about nothing, or a real issue for future relations between the Catholic Church and Israel/Judaism?

What will a Palestinian state accomplish? I'll tell you what. It will give Muslim terrorists a better, more strategic staging area to launch attacks...and the target will get smaller thanks to Israel giving land away.

 

Seriously. Is there a person out there with just a shred of common sense who thinks the Palestinians/Arabs/Terrorist Organizations will honor a peace treaty regardless of what kind of deal they get?

 

Has the world completely gone off the deep end? Politicians throughout the world call for the same thing. You'd think they, of all people, would understand the concept of making promises you have no intention of keeping to get what you want. The results of past agreements and treaties speak for themselves. The Arab world has repeatedly stated it's goal of destroying Israel...a separate Palestinian state doesn't accomplish that goal. It merely gives them a little help in accomplishing it.

I think the Pope should lose his 501©(3) classification because he politics from the pulpit.

1) The Pope has said he was drafted into compulsory service in the Hitler Youth, as were all German children in those years. He has said he did not share their ideology or take part in the organization. What more does he need to do?

 

2) What part of their role in the Holocaust should the Church apologize for? Hiding countless Jewish people in the monasteries and churches across Europe including within the Vatican itself? For the sacrifice of countless priests who spoke out against Hitler and themselves ended up dead? When the war ended, Pope Pius XII was viewed as a hero worldwide. Then "The Deputy," a play about Pius, was released. It changed everything. The entire obsession with Pius as silently consenting to the Holocaust or simply remaining silent began with this play... not with reality. It's an excuse that enemies or opponents of the Church can latch on to in order to spread hatred for the Church and its institutions. I truly believe that Pius's actions saved hundreds of thousands of lives; while he may have appeared silent to the outside world, he was certainly not inactive. To suggest otherwise is to rewrite history.

Regarding the questions in the thread...I don't think the pope owes an apology for his childhood/youth or for what the church did or did not do years ago.

 

As for the last statement, two points. I don't believe anyone should have to apologize for their opinion. However, I disagree strongly with his opinion/stance on the issue. Israeli aggression is a result of provocation...why don't all these politicians, and the pope, call for the palestinians/arabs/terrorists to end their terrorist attacks, to denounce terrorism, and to be accountable for past actions, namely breaking previous agreements.

 

How long will the world try to appease the Muslim world before getting the point? I'm disappointed in the pope's stance on the issue. I won't say Israel is completely innocent, but I will say that the bulk of responsibility does not fall on them. To try to force them to give up land and denounce their aggression is the height of absurdity.

 

Sorry...I need a new thread. My issue has less to do with the pope (other than being disappointed in his stance) and more to do with the general consensus the world seems to have arrived at regarding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

I can assure you that the pope does renounce terrorism and implores groups like Hamas regularly to put down their weapons. But asking terrorists not to be terrorists isn't exactly an Earth-shattering statement. The Holy Father believes that both sides are culpable in the continuing violence and I don't see how you can look at this conflict and not see problems in the way each side has handled themselves. I don't deny for a second that Israel is greatly put upon as a state and is surrounded by enemies, but it often seems as if the Israeli government is willing to blow up the entire haystack to find the needle.

Maybe the Palestinians and other Muslims will tone down the hatred if they are giving their own Palestinian State. After all Palestine was partitioned by the United Nations to form the state of Israel in 1948.

There have been various treaties, agreements, etc… that would create a Palestinian state, but they have all been rejected/broken by the Palestinians. The only suitable solution to the Palestinians and many Arab nations is the complete removal of Israel from what they consider Palestine.

Maybe we have a biased media that doesn't give us the whole truth. I find it pretty silly to believe that Palestine is solely responsible for the issues going on in the Middle East. From world publications I have gathered that Israel isn't the most cooperative nation.
