Theoldguy Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 CovCath 5 Beechwood 0 It was an outstanding pitching performance by CovCath Zach Isler in going the distance and picking up his ninth (9-0) victory. Ice continued the complete game streak by the starting CovCath pitchers extending the streak to eight straight games. Ice was just about unhittable giving up only 2 hits and striking out 12 while not walking a single Beechwood batter and throwing only 82 pitches. The steal of the game? The University of Cincinnati, in signing Isler to a scholarship last week! Ryan Darner went 2/4 with a double, triple and 2 rbi's (55,56). Why is this young man not getting more colege offers, is just beyond me. Tyler Holocher did it on the field by turning a ground ball into a 6-3 DP, and at the plate by hitting a double to drive in a run, walked and scored a run and was hbp. More after dinner.
cch5432 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Isler was unhittable. The only two hits were immediately turned into a double play, perfectly executed by Holocher and Krumme.
AirYardGo Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 So this means HC vs Beechwood and CCH vs Holmes, does anyone have the dates of the District Tournament??
Blue Magic Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Smith was pretty wild today with I think 5 hit batters.
bluegrass09 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Smith was pretty wild today with I think 5 hit batters. Actually 6, and he only gave up 4 hits. But hats off to Isler for not letting many Bwood runners. Anybody clock these two pitchers?
bjknku02 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Smith was pretty wild today with I think 5 hit batters. We were out in centerfield watching and counted what we thought to be at least 7 hit batters by Smith. Is this not correct?
Theoldguy Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 CovCath top of the 1st: Nutini 8, Siemer hbp, Maile hits a ball to the third baseman (with the seat I had, I couldn't see if the first baseman didn't catch it, or if it was a bad throw) E-5or3 men on 1st and 3rd one out. Maile steals second base and the Beechwood catchers throw the ball into CF for a error that allows Siemer to score. Beechwood 1st: K (1), K (2), 5-3 on 12 pitches. CovCath leads after one complete inning 1-0 on a HBP and two Beechwood errors. CovCath 2nd: Holocher walks, Lafever goes hbp, men on 1st and second no outs. Schlagbaum get a sac bunt down 1-3 moving the runners up while making the first out of the inning. Then the strange play of the game! Martin with a 2-2 count tries to lay down a bunt, but he misses the ball and the Beechwood catcher misses the called strike and Holocher comes in with the second run. It was a heads up play by the Holocher as the ball was not foul tipped so it was not a dead ball. The Beechwood coach tried to get the man in blue to change his mind, but from my seat next to the back stop I didn't hear the tip, nor did I see the ball change it's direction. The Beechwood catcher just missed the ball. Beechwood 2nd: K (3), 9, 5-3 (14) pitches After two complete innings it's CovCath 2 Beechwood 0 without CovCath getting a single hit in the game so far. CovCath 3rd: Maile 4-3, Darner 6-3 and Isler 5-3 Beechwood 3rd: K (4), 3, 1 (6) pitches After three complete it's still CovCath 2 Beechwood 0 CovCath 4th: Holocher hbp, Lafever sac bunt, moving Holocher to second with one out. Schlagbaum goes 3, and then Martin 3 to end the inning. Beechwood 4th: K (5), K (6), K (7) (15) pitches End of 4 complete innings it's still CovCath 2 Beechwood 0 CovCath 5th: Nutini tries to bunt but goes 2-3, Siemer hbp (in the head) Maile hits a single, runner on first and second with one out. Darner on a 0-2 count hits a shot over the Right Fielders head for a triple (5) and knocks in Siemer and Maile for 2 RBI's (55 & 56). Beechwood 5th: Snyder gets a single, J. Colosimo gets a single but Larimore hits a ball to Holocher who steps on second and then throws the ball to Krumme for a DP. Snyder on third two outs, and Smith goes K (8) to end the innings (13) pitches. End of 5 complete innings with CovCath 5 Beechwood 0 CovCath 6th: Schlagbaum 5-3 Martin walks, Nutini gets hbp, both more up on a WP, Siemer goes 5-3 and Maile 4 to end the inning. Beechwood 6th 5-3, K (9), K (10) (12) pitches End of 6 complete it's CovCath 5 Beechwood 0 CovCath 7th: Darner gets a double, Isler goes 5-3, Holocher K and Lafever goes 1-3. Beechwood 7th: K (11), K (12) and 2 to end the game (10) pitches. The good: Isler pitching WOW. As I stated UC gets the steal of the year in signing Ice. Darner continues to knock in the runs, and Holocher is playing outstanding in the field and at the plate. The bad: Nothing at all. The ugly: Sorry, but the Beechwood baseball field grass infield and the height of the grass. The Tigers took home field advantage to a new high by not cutting the grass in at least a couple of day's. Haven't seen grass this high on a baseball field in quite a while. It indeed had an effect on the game. The CovCath hitting: Nutini 4 PA and 2 hbp Siemer 4 PA 2 runs scored and 2 hbp Maile 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit 1 sb and reached base via E-5or3 Darner 4 PA 1 run scored 2 hits double triple (5) and 2 rbi's (55 & 56) Isler 4 PA and 2 k's Holocher 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit double 1 rbi 1 walk 1 k and 1 hbp Lafever 3 PA 1 sac 1 k and 1 hbp Schlagbaum 3 PA and 1 sac Martin 3 PA 1 walk 1 k CovCath pitching: Isler (9-0) 82 pitches 7 complete innings 22 PA 2 hits 0 runs 0 earned runs 0 walks 12 k's CovCath is now 27-3 and by beating Holmes, Cov Holy Cross and Beechwood earn the #1 seed in the 35th District Tournament starting on Monday May 18 @ CovCath. CovCath next game is at #9 Lexington Catholic @ LexCath at 5:30pm Tuesday.

CovCath next game is at #9 Lexington Catholic @ LexCath at 5:30pm Tuesday. Nice job by Isler. Pitched a heck of a game. I was sitting by a couple of scouts and they said both he and Smith were in high 80's occasionally hitting 90. Not that it matters, but Darner had two doubles. The triple you gave him was a double with a throwing error by the right fielder to allow him to go to third. Minor detail.
Theoldguy Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 In my humble opinion (and remember indeed it is my book:idunno:) I thought RD would have made third safe even if it (the throw) had been perfect, as he was going three all the way on the hit.
nees1212 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I got to watch a couple innings before our ball practice, and the key with Isler was that he was throwing first pitch strikes. He was getting ahead of batters early. That was the first game I've seen on the new field. If Beechwood makes it to the region, they're lucky they have a turf football field, because going from their field to the Freedom's is night and day. Why did they go with a complete grass infield? I would hate to play on that everyday. And it looks like the everyday abuse is starting to take it's toll.

Spartan79 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I believe they practice alot on the turf football field so it shouldn't be an issue for many teams. BW, cch, Dixie, Ryle and I'm not sure who else have sports turf football fields so they won't miss a beat IMHO.
Spartan79 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 That was a triple for sure, IMO. You can pad the stats however you wish but when Darner was rounding second the ball was flying over the cut man's head. That's why I have to take all these stats with a little grain of salt.

I was just stating that if they didn't have that field, they'd be in for a big adjustment at FF.
