It was not a strike and he did not swing. The umps were awful all day, and inconsistent on their zone to say the least, or were consistently bad if you look at it that way.

 

And to clarify, I do not blame the errors on the turf at all. It was 100% errors made by CovCath. Our middle infield usually comes through for us and this morning they just didn't have it. It's alright, I think they know that they had every opportunity to win that game and that they learned from it.

I'm trying to figure out how Blue can switch from a strike call to a HBP. Are you sure he called strike?

The pitch hit him and literally bounced into the zone. There is no way it was in the strike zone originally because it hit him in the triceps area. If the catcher drops that ball its a clear HBP but somehow it went right in the mit.

If it hit the batter it is a dead ball. It does not matter where the catcher catches it.

 

Just to clarify if the ball does hit the batter but the ball was in the strike zone then it may be a dead ball but it is still called a strike. I had a situation like that come up with my son on a curveball where the batter leaned out way over into the strike zone. It was a peculiar situation to watch. Even the opposing team's coach tried to come out and argue about it. The other teams players though agreed that their own batter leaned over into the strike zone to try and draw the HBP.

Now sure but when was the last time a CovCath team beat the number one ranked Commonwealth of Kentucky Baseball team? This group of Colonels did just that in beating Owensboro Apollo and I am sure proud of them.

After playing a terrible first three innings of “D” against St. X, the CovCath players turned it around and didn’t commit an error in this game and had a couple of great plays.

Apollo first:

Fogless FO 9, Morrow (man can this kid hit) single, Head double men on second and third one out. Hodskins pops up 6 but Krumme throws a WP to allow Apollo to score their first run of the game, but then West k’s for the last out of the inning.

CovCath first:

Nutini walks on a 3-2 count; Siemer gets a base hit, but then goes brain dead and gets picked off first. Man on third base one out. Maile hits a double to score Nutini to tie the game and Darner hits a shot to (RD ville) for a triple to score Maile. Darner on third one out and Isler knocks Darner in with a SF 9 to now make the score after one complete CovCath 3 Apollo 1.

Apollo second: They go down 1, 2, 3 on a K, 8 and 4-3.

CovCath second: Stayton 3, Martin doubles, Nutini 7 but Siemer hbp then Maile walks but first a WP sends Martin home to score a run. After two complete innings, the score is now CovCath 4 Apollo 1.

Apollo third: Johnson 4-3, Fogless 5-3 but Morrow (man this kid can hit) triples, Head walks and then Hodskins goes 5-4 in a run down of Head. The ball was hit sharply and Darner made the stop, but I think he felt he couldn’t get the runner at first on the throw but did get the runner off second for the last out, but the run scored prior to the tag out.

CovCath third: Isler goes 4-3, Holocher single, Lafever doubles, men on second and third when Krumps pulls out the old double squeeze move. Stayton lays down a beautiful bunt to score Holocher, and the Apollo catcher throws out Stayton at first by a hair. As every CovCath fan understands, here comes Lafever and he is out at the plate in a close play. IMO I thought he was out, but others in the crowd thought he was safe, as the catcher did drop the ball but I don’t think Lafever ever got to touch the plate. After three complete; CovCath 5 Apollo 2.

Apollo fourth: They go down 2-3, 7, hbp and 8.

CovCath fourth: Love this inning. Martin 4-3, Nutini single, moves to second on a WP and scores on Siemer E-1. Maile doubles scoring Siemer then Darner goes (RD ville) again for a triple to score Maile. After four complete it’s CovCath 9 Apollo 2.

Apollo fifth: Krumme is roughed up, as the first batter Johnson gets a single, Fogless walks and Krumps comes in and takes Krumme out and brings in Darner. Morrow (man this kid can hit) hits a double, Head walks then Hodskins flies out 9 to score a run. West singles to knock another run in but after Laster singles Krumps takes RD out and in comes Schlagbaum. The fist thing he does is pick off West off second. Brennan makes a head up play by first stepping off the rubber, then running directly at West instead of throwing the ball to an infielder. By doing as such, he makes the runner commit first, second out, then he gets the next batter to

CovCath fifth and sixth they don’t score

Apollo sixth: The play of the game happens in this innings by some outstanding hustle and execution. Kaferp 3, Johnson 3 two outs but Fogless single and then Morrow (man can that kid hit) hits a the ball down the line and Lafever get on his horse and runs the ball down as Kaferp is nearing third. Lafever makes a perfect throw to Holocher who in turn from rather deep/SS shallow/LF throws a perfect strike to Maile and we all know what happens when a runner tries to take something that belongs to Luke, he is out and at that point you knew Apollo was done with.

Apollo seventh: Head 1-3 Hawkins 9 but West singles, Laster hbp, Daugherty singles to load the bases but Schlagbaum gets Kaferp to FO 8 to end the game.

Before I go on with the good/bad/ugly and the stats, I want to again say that Morrow (man can that kid hit). 4 PA 4 hits three doubles 3 runs scored. Man the kid can hit. Theoldguy is indeed impressed with you Mr. Morrow.

The good: Again the “D” plus getting 12 hits and having Krumme and Schlagbaum pitching so well. I also want to let the CovCath fans know that Neil Martin gave it his all today, by risking life and limb by going up against the St. X fence in right field. Neil tried his best to catch a well hit ball, but literally got caught in the fence and the effort to catch the ball was impressive! Outstanding try Neil.

Our pitcher and catcher didn't see it hit the batter...but if your player says it hit him I'll accept that. I will say that I saw nothing close to the ball "bouncing into the zone". It must have been one stich from the ball that tickled his tricep because the catcher didn't have to move his glove to adjust to any change in the ball's flight. It's then a judgment call as whether the ball was in the strike zone at the point of contact. And yes the tricep could have been in the strike zone if the hitter was looking for something on the outside part of the plate(he was down in the count, not an unreasonable guess on his part) and triggered his hands to reach for something outside. The first gesture by the umpire was a ring up called third. He shouldn't change that call based on the batter's reaction.

The complex was indeed awesome although (if you are a X fan) you need to get the outfield fence fixed in right field. The only complaint was the sound system, sometime you could hear then others times you couldn't but that could have been due to the wind. As I stated it was the nicest HS complex I have been at. Congrats.....

He did hit very well this weekend and played even a better SS.

 

The relay throw from very deep short or mid left field was a perfect strike to Maile.

 

I forget what inning it was but he dove on the ground for a ball that was going to be hit to left field for a single and although he had no chance to get the runner out, he kept the runner on second from going home for a run.

 

Sometimes it's the little things that the coaches see but fans don't see or understand, that makes a player special to the team and Holocher is that type of player. No he isn't flashy, but he just gets the job done in the field on the bases and at the plate.

An update on the CovCath Right Fielder Neil Martin who went up against the fence at St. Xavier giving it his all to catch the ball.

 

Neil is very sore today after cracking a rib while being pinned under the chain link fence in right field. He hit the fence on a dive and skidded face first right under the chain link fence. He will miss a couple of games, but his Dad told me he will be okay.
