It is scary that he fears repurcussions.
April 13, 200917 yr It is positive that our president allows action. It is scary that he fears repurcussions. Scary because....?
April 13, 200917 yr Extremely happy about the outcome, but I have to ask...Why the heck did this take so dang long?
April 13, 200917 yr Extremely happy about the outcome, but I have to ask...Why the heck did this take so dang long? Well, those taking hostages usually don't often stand above deck making themselves susceptible to sniper fire.
April 13, 200917 yr It sounds like Obama handled this well. He gave the military personnel on the scene the needed flexibility to adjust to events as they unfolded. Also, it seems that the military snipers did their job when called upon.
April 13, 200917 yr Scary because....? It doesnt sound like he is willing to take the same hard line in the future.
April 13, 200917 yr It doesnt sound like he is willing to take the same hard line in the future. I took his comment to mean that he fears reprecussions as in, this will embolden the pirates to kill rather than negotiate. Not that he is afraid.
April 13, 200917 yr Author I took his comment to mean that he fears reprecussions as in, this will embolden the pirates to kill rather than negotiate. Not that he is afraid. Killing hostages is a bad business model for the Pirates if they wish to receive ransom? They may go on a spree and kill some as "Pay Back". All that has kept the pirates from being killed by special forces dropped by helicopters on the ships is the fact that they had not been killing hostages. In most cases the "Loot" on the ship would be hard to liquidate for cash, there is much more money in they way they have been doing it.

Seems there's another point of view out there: "This could escalate violence in this part of the world, no question about it," said Gortney, the commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. Abdullahi Lami, one of the pirates holding the Greek ship anchored in the Somali town of Gaan, said: "Every country will be treated the way it treats us. In the future, America will be the one mourning and crying," he told The Associated Press. "We will retaliate (for) the killings of our men." Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old self-proclaimed pirate, told the AP from one of Somalia's piracy hubs, Eyl, that: "From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages)." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/piracy
April 13, 200917 yr Seems there's another point of view out there: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/piracy Not sure if this article mentioned it but I read elsewhere that France and another country had used lethal force on the pirates with no rise in retaliations. It's a business to them.
April 13, 200917 yr Not sure if this article mentioned it but I read elsewhere that France and another country had used lethal force on the pirates with no rise in retaliations. It's a business to them. France used lethal force either yesterday or the day before. I would say it's too early to gauge. Pirates still hold about 230 hostages on different ships, and I doubt they'll stop taking over new ships.
