Who will Holmes arch adversary be in 09-10?

Featured Replies

For the past 5 years, Holmes has had a good run of athletes, has won 4 of 5 regionals, the state, etc., but for the first 4 years of that run CovCath was a constant and worthy adversary. This past year, I would say that, even though they didn't play until Saturday morning in March, Elliott County stepped into the role of Holmes chief adversary (fueled in large part by BGP). So who is there next year? Every Superman needs a Lex Luther, after all.

They certainly crossed my mind - anyone know if this past year's game was part of a multi-year deal, or if there are plans for them to meet in 09-10?

This past year's game only happened because both agreed to play in the Bluegrass/Buckeye Challenge.

I'd hope that those two will play again this year, but not sure it'd happen unless it's in a tournament or classic somewhere.

Would imagine these two will be ranked 1-2 in state in most preseason polls and not be surprised to see Scott Co with #1 ranking in preseason.

I would be surprised...guess we'll see. Just hard to put someone ahead of the state champs who return so much IMO. The Lexington Catholic that Holmes completely dismantled in the quarter finals beat next year's Scott County team, i.e. without Phares. I would have liked to have seen a rematch this year between Holmes and Scott County in which Phares played meaningfully, but without him I think Holmes is clearly ahead.

I agree. Scott Co will be good next year, but much more vulnerable without Phares. They'll lose more than one game against KY competition this upcoming season and I don't see them running the table in the 11th this year up until the region championship like they did last year.

Boone County had more success than anybody else against them this year and they return alot of thier players next year.

Boone will be a top 3 9th region team next year, but will be no where near what they were this year with the loss of Mcfarland, Brown, and Spaulding.

I believe Holmes and Mason has a game scheduled next year!!!:ylsuper:

That's good to hear. Which "fieldhouse" are they playing at?

Boone has a couple of sophomores that can fill a couple of the spots opened up by the graduating seniors. The game plan may change a little, but I think they will be better than what most people are thinking, just as they were this year. The JV team didn't win two championships in a row off of luck, they have the kids that can play, but they just had to wait their turn, and I'm sure they are eager!

JV success doesn't always equate to success at the varsity level. There are a lot of sophomores that play strictly varsity rather than JV. Rice of Holmes, Hodges of Conner, Stauffer of Ryle are a few examples of sophomores who play strictly varsity but would no doubt be huge factors at the JV level. How many JV champions, over the past few years, have won the region title the next year as juniors or the year after as seniors?

Mcfarland, Brown, and Spaulding will be harder to replace than you think. You can't just replace a kid like Steve Mcfarland.
