I like Greg Paulus ans respect him, but I am glad to see his days over simply because Duke plays man to man, and he doesn't possess nearly enough lateral quickness to play with an extremely athletic PG. In regards to Duke's inside presence, it isn't very good, but it was far from horrible, they got a lot of quality minutes from Thomas and Zoubek in the last 10 -11 games or so. I look for that presence to get boosted immensely next season with two more long athletic kids coming in. Duke should be in the Top 10 most of next season, I sure hope they can really turn it on in March.

Villanova isn't exactly a team well-known for its inside presence, so what happened there? No defense at the guard spot.

 

 

When I am saying we need an inside presence I am speaking from an offensive standpoint. Villanova beat us with their defense. No team has played us with the intense, in your face, pressure defense the way Villanova did last Thursday night. That is what happened. They had us so shook with their defense that when we had an open shot, we couldn't believe it and would rush to get it off because we knew someone was coming to apply pressure. That's what happened. I think when I was saying we lacked an inside presence I should have clarified that I meant from an offensive standpoint. I don't think Villanova put on that great of an offensive display against us, their defense is what beat us.

I blame that on youth and immaturity. I would expect him to continue to grow as a player and person. He's not stupid. He didn't play much his freshman year and he became a starter this year. Some guys mature later than others. I would suspect that even though he is athletically capable of guarding most point guards in the country, if continues to make boneheaded plays, he'll be on the bench at the end of his senior year like Greg Paulus was. I would think that a sophomore would grow and learn from his mistakes and be a better player his junior year.

There are some that are questioning Krzyzewski a bit, but the Duke fan base is a much different entity than that of Kentucky's. Because it's a private school, there aren't as many alumni, and they are more scattered throughout the country that those of a state university.

I will say that I liked Paulus a lot and overlooked his shortcomings. I hated to see his career end the way it did because he played and gave so much the first 3 years of his career and ended his senior year on the bench. I love his heart and soul he brought to every game.

 

Thomas and Zoubek both improved as the season went on. I just hope they continue to improve and become a great force to be reckoned with. We need inside presence and they are the top 2 candidates at the moment.

 

I look forward to next year and maybe Coach K can add 1 more recruit to the two bigs we have coming in as well.

Let me re-phrase that, if they can become serviceable and bring us a combined 20 points and rebounds a game or close to it is what I am looking for. I shouldn't have said great force.

Duke has won more games this decade than any team in any decade EVER.....just to let you know.....If this starting five come back next year, Duke will be a major contender. When you shoot 26% it's tough to win, a lot of that was due to defensive pressure, but they also missed a lot of very open looks. 'Nova was almost a mirror of themselves, that's tough to matchup against.

 

They better go find some guards who can defend, first.
