It was certainly a missed call. No chance that was a backcourt violation.

 

However, I would disagree with the above. In watching it several times, I heard the whistle and saw the center official come running in BEFORE the Iriquois girl threw it out of bounds.

 

Without the whistle it would have been Etown ball since Iriquois did ultimately throw it out of bounds.

If the whistle occured AFTER the ball went out of bounds then it should have been ruled an inadvertant whistle and the ball given to Etown.

 

 

I am fairly certain the whistle occured DURING the play and BEFORE the ball went out of bounds. In this situation the correct call is still and inadvertant whistle but you have to give the ball to Iroqouis because they were still in possession of the ball when the whistle was blown.

 

 

It was a HORRIBLY missed call that very well could have (and probably did) cost Etown the game. Sucks for them but bad calls are a part of the game.....I guess.

Depends on what you mean? In the rulebook there are actually certain situations that fall under "correctable error." This isn't one of them.

 

IF the official thought/realized he made a mistake as soon as he blew the whistle and then got together with the other officials to talk about it you've still got an issue. Did the Iriquois girl have possession when the whistle blew? If so, you could go inadvertent whistle and give the ball to Iriquois. Of course, you're going to then have a heated discussion with the E-Town coach who will claim that she threw the ball OOB.

 

If you decide there was no possession but it was an inadvertent whistle you would then go to the arrow.

Bobby Hall is one of the best from the 16th region. He just missed one at a very critical time.

The Iroquois girl dribbles the ball then grabs it as the whistle blows. She clearly had control. Unfortunately, it was a blown call, but either way, would have resulted in an inadvertent whistle. What others are missing is that the girl who threw the first pass for Etown emailed it to press row only to have a teammate make a heck of a play to save it back off her own foot and then Iroquois gets the ball. Let's also don't put 100% stock all in one play. Let's talk about 17 turnovers, missed shots (18 of 42 shooting), etc. While the focus may get to one play if a team is looking for some excuse, its about 32 minutes (in this case more than that) worth of play. And on this one, either way, by rule, once the whistle blew Iroquois was going to get the ball. It shouldn't detract from the tremendous season for both teams and a great finale to girls basketball for this year.
