This is the problem with our political system. Neither side wants the other to succeed. This tells me that they too interested in power than actually helping the country.

 

As far as policies are concerned, ... I have a few policies that I hope Obama fails to pass. However, as a President (whom I did not vote for), I hope he succeeds as a leader.

Lets assume for now that your interpretation is what he truly meant.

 

What do you tell the victims of a failed economy? Sorry? Hey, tough for you but the rest of us will be better off in the long run?

 

That's where I'm struggling with any attempt at what he really meant.

He is essentially advocating a form of "tough love" on the economy and as is typical when tough love is advocated, there is resistance to enduring the initial pain and that resistance is inversely proportional to one's conviction that long term benefits will result from the short term pain.

Do we use the "tough love" line when people lose their house due to no job? Do we tell the kids that their parents divorce due to the strain caused by no income that its just a case of tough love and in the long run.....?

 

That's my issue. The downside to the recession being prolonged is that families will come apart and people will suffer irreparable damage.

Go to a 3rd world country.

If your point is that there are different levels of suffering, I agree.

 

However, no one in this country falls to the level of suffering that they might if they were in said 3rd world country. So?

My dad (wouldn't vote for me if I had an R behind my name) and I were discussing the supposed suffering in this country and he said kids are starving. And I asked him to name one person that was truly starving in this country. I told him that African kids are truly starving but for a country that is seeing child obesity being a huge problem, it is very hard for us to claim we have all these kids starving.

 

He agreed that the African kids are truly starving and our kids are not and we should do more to help them.

 

I asked him if he knew which President has sent the most aid to Africa.

He didn't but guessed it would be Clinton.

When I told him it was George W. Bush, he refused to believe it and said he would need proof as he didn't believe that was true. He firmly said he did not believe that W tripled what Clinton sent to Africa.

 

So, I printed off a CNN article, a European newspaper article and an article from a Medical newspaper talking about the aid that W was providing Africa to combat AIDS and starvation.

He was dumbfounded and said he still didn't know if he believed it. And questioned if it was true why wasn't it reported.

I pointed him to one of the articles that indicated that it wasn't being reported because the Christian compassionate Bush didn't fit in with the war-mongering colded-hearted, supposedly lying Bush image that the media was creating.
