I agree, nothing against coach Hyder but I wish they would have made this hire instead of him then. This is the third coach in 4 years for some of these boys.

 

Coach Hyder is a great person and he did what he could with the team.

I can foresee kids getting looks from colleges because Nick Rice was respected from several other colleges that he competed against. This is something that Newport has lacked is a college connection. I have heard over the past few years that a lot of talented players leave Newport because their parents and them feel as though they ould not get any looks from colleges at Newport. I can assure everyone those days will be over with Head Coach Rice in control of the program.

First of all I believe you have misunderstood what I was trying to say. So here it is - I know that if you have talent a college will find you so what I am saying is that it is a plus to have a head coach that has some college connections to get kids into a college to play more and further their education. A lot of people believe that you need to be at a school that has been successful and you will get looks from colleges. IMO that is not the case - a good athlete is a student first and needs to make the best of every opportunity they have in the classroom and then on the field. For example, Coach Schlarman had a lot of connections from his playing days at UK. He was able to get some kids some good opportunities based on a kids performance in the classroom and on the field.

IMO, it's not the coach's sole responsibility to find a D-III or NAIA school for Johnny. Johnny's performance on the field, grades and a little elbow grease from mom and dad should do the trick. The coach can produce a highlight tape to assist. The coaches in a conference can select Johnny to various all-star games for the needed publicity. But the parents and son need to respond to the letters, phone calls and high school visits from the recruiters to help ink a deal. If the athlete has the qualities to play at the next level, I am sure any high school coach will do all that is necessary to assist. Why wouldn't he?

What letters, phone calls and high school visits from recruiters? Again, we aren't talking D-1 talent here. D-3 or NAIA school's don't have the recruiting budget of a D-1 school. They aren't magically appearing at Johnny's doorstep with a Letter of Intent without the help of Johnny's high school coaches making them aware of Johnny's abilities.

Having gone through the recruiting process with NAIA and D3 myself, you dont have to depend on the coach to get you on the roster. As far as D3 you can pretty much enroll at the school and tell them you would like to play football and they will let you on the team or at least try out. Its not hard to make a D3 team they will let almost anyone on the team.

 

It definently doesnt hurt to have a coach help and I agree with you guys that they should do as much as they can to help every player possible.

Not all kids are fortunate enough to have 2 parents. That can make the process daunting to some. Not all adults are equipped to deal with the process.

I was talking to a few of the football player today, they told me that Coach Rice had a meeting with them one day this week. They was very excited about what Coach Rice had to say and the history lesson he gave them on Newport football. They said they couldn’t wait till Monday to get started. After what the boys had to say and all the enthusiasm they had I know that Newport made the right move to bring Coach Rice here. I know that Newport will RETURN TO DOMINANCE!

Have YOU ever been through the recruiting process? Sounds like you have been personally jilted... and have this belief that coaches don't bother to further the education of their student athletes. I will stand by the coaches at any school vs your attacks. Through the years I have been fortunate to maintain friendships with many coaches in the N Ky area. The very first thing they bring up is how proud they are of this athlete and that athlete getting offers from the various collegiate institutions. Once again I will simply pose the question to you, Why wouldn't a high school coach promote his athletes to the recruiters calling and visiting the schools?" If they are collegiate material the coach will do all he can to get them to the next level. If they do not have the skills and grades... they should have a heart to heart talk.

 

BTW, Georgetown, Centre, Union, University of the Cumberlands, Thomas More, University of Dayton and many other non - DI schools make the circut in northern Kentucky...they make the rounds to all the high schools. Perhaps not to Johnny's door step... but to the door step of the AD and Guidance Counselor.
