Congratulations to Nick!

He is exactly what we need to get back on track. Coach Hyder is a great guy and could have been a great coach if he was just given a little support by the principal and central office. There was a road block thrown in front of him every step of the way which is not what a head coach should be dealing with. I just hope that they (principal/co) give him the support he needs. He will need this to be succeed.

A good hire for the Wildcats, Nick is a good guy and has been around football his whole life. I just wish he would have been the first choice and gotten hired months ago, but sometimes decision makers make bad ones and it works out for the best.:confused:

First, congrats Nick! I know we spoke last night for over an hour about you getting the job at Newport. This is a dream we both had and all your hard work that you have done has now allowed you to reach a great point to climb to the pinnacle in your professional career.

I remember all the times walking to weightlifting together in high school with 2 feet of snow on the ground over winter break when we were sophomores. We would talk talking about what it would be like to be as smart as Coach Lucas, what would it be like to be as good a coach as he was.

I can remember driving to 6:30 A.M. lifting at Thomas More. Talking about not only Coach Lucas, but Dean Paul also. How we were both so blessed to be playing for great coaches and would one day want to do the same thing for a living and hopefully at Newport.

Now that we both are in the coaching profession, all I can say is congratulations on having your dream job. You know what to do. These two coaches that we played for also had to go through a little rough time with players buying into what needed to be done. Both coaches had immediate success. Coach Lucas took a team that went 0-10 the year before to a playoff appearance his first year. Dean Paul's first year at Thomas More had Coach Paul begin practice with roughly 90 players and after a tough and rigorous camp and regular season practice, the roster dwindled down to roughly 50 players. They installed discipline and did not care if you really liked it or not, they were their to win..........END OF STORY

To all you Newport faithful, alumni, and parents,

I hope you are not expecting an easy way to victory at Newport. Nick Rice will deliver on Discipline (Not what the coaches do to you, but rather what they do for you). You might hear your son say it is rough, it is hard, but guess what, SO IS LIFE. If you believe that there is some magical potion, play, or scheme that Nick Rice is going to bring to Newport.

I can tell you that schemes will have the idea of K.I.L.L. (Keep it likeable and learnable) with a huge emphasis of the following

Offense: Block/Take care of the football (no fumbles or int's)

Defense: Get off blocks/Tackle

SO when the day comes that your son comes home tired, beat up, and doesn't think he can do it anymore, tell him he can and love him. What you have to realize is that there is going to be a day that he comes home all tired and beat up. For as tired and beat up he is, know he got that much better that day. Just make sure you tell your sons that you believe in them and know they can, Nick Rice will make sure that they will.

Newport it is time for some "RTD". Return to Dominance

Nick will have some talented athetes this year that will work hard and want to win. I look forward to watchin the Cat's play. I hope he doesn't waist any time to get started!

Yes he will have a lot of talent coming back as far as the skilled positions. The line will still lack size but I'm sure Nick will take of that. I only wish that the seniors leaving could have had a chance to play for someone like Nick Rice.

Congratulations to Nick and his family! This was a great decision by Newport's administration. Nick was one hell of a competitor when I played against him in high school. He was one of the hardest hitters I had faced.

 

If given some time I think Nick will do wonders for the Wildcat program! Best of luck to him and Newport

I am sure it is going to be rough at first, but I am sure Nick will persevere and bring back some good old hard work and discipline to this program. He may not be the most popular for a while but he will be setting these boys up for life not just football. They will learn that hard work does pay off, maybe not immediately but it does in the long run.

Even though, my boys have graduated I will follow the Wildcats still and be rooting for Nick all of the way!

I can foresee kids getting looks from colleges because Nick Rice was respected from several other colleges that he competed against. This is something that Newport has lacked is a college connection. I have heard over the past few years that a lot of talented players leave Newport because their parents and them feel as though they ould not get any looks from colleges at Newport. I can assure everyone those days will be over with Head Coach Rice in control of the program.

I agree, nothing against coach Hyder but I wish they would have made this hire instead of him then. This is the third coach in 4 years for some of these boys.
