The Fossil Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 wow, I sure didnt see that one coming. The Cards must have had an off night. They are still a good team and this may re-focus them as theyre getting ready to start tournament play.

Without the benefit of one particular man in stripes tonight they would have probably been blown out.
TheSecondComing Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 The difference in the game was the 3rd quarter and bench play. All starters but Meyer had 2 fouls early in the second quarter and the bench, particularly Watkins, stepped up big time. FC won the third quarter 24-7 and were up by as many as 16 in the game. GRC mad a small run late but 8 was the closest they could get as FC gave Stenzel a wide open lay-up at the last second because the game was over. Zollo really impressed me. If he grows to 6'11 he will be a good steal for Billy G. He works extremely hard especially on the glass and it pays off since he averages 11 rpg.
TheSecondComing Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Sorry, 5 was the closest GRC cut it with about 20-something seconds. FC only missed one free throw down the stretch.

He has some offensive skills, and I agree he worked hard and posted up pretty strong. However, a lot of guys can rebound if they are allowed to put two hands in someone's back all night when they are boxed out. He will need to grow to 6'11" if he expects to play at UK.

Only scored 7 points in the 2nd quarter and 7 in the 3rd...can't win games that way. GRC is a good team with a lot of good kids. Without the benefit of one particular man in stripes tonight they would have probably been blown out. We must have not been watching the same game. Zollo was hammered all night. Franklin Co I think only missed 3 foul shots all night...one of the best free throw shooting team I have seen. FC is a good team, good shot selection and solid shooters. One of the worst games I have seen GRC play this year. We started off great...then we couldn't throw it in the ocean. Congrats to FC...best of luck the rest of the season.

I have to differ strongly on this point!
gold sunrise Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Unofficial scores for GRC: Zollo 17 hatton 22 Stenzel 13 Williams 1
Eta Rho Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Tough loss for the Cards, but FC is a solid team. I expect both to be in the thick of things here in 3 weeks in their respective region.

He doesn't always put up a double double, but who does? And if you leave him wide open he will stroke it. Even after hitting two in a row Zollo stayed at about the free throw line and Watkins had to knock down one more three to get respect. I think GRC bad offensive night was all FC's defense. When Meyer was on Stenzel, every shot he took was contested. He did most of his work when someone other than Meyer was on him. FC also plays very good help-side defense. Looking at GRC's schedule there is no doubt IMO FC plays better defense than any team they have faced.
doomer Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Tough loss for the Cards, but FC is a solid team. I expect both to be in the thick of things here in 3 weeks in their respective region. I believe that will be the case. GRC has all the tools to make it to Rupp. I understand it is likely that Rogers could be back for the regional tournament as well which would help them further. It will not be easy to get through either region. Franklin County suffered through a lot of foul trouble tonight, and the guys coming in hit a lot of big shots...Jennels, McKee, Watkins was on fire, and Rivers gave some good minutes as well that kept FC in the game when four of five starters were out most of the 2nd quarter. There was one ref. that called three of four (one was at least close to a foul) phantom fouls on one particular FC player and pretty much took him out of the game. I do not understand what drives a paid "professional" to show such bias. I wonder if this guy refereed the GRC/Mason County game?
