Gambling or not he still deserves to be in the HOF. As a player Rose was one of the toughest, hard nosed, gritty players the game has ever seen. Rose had raw talent and he is more than deserving of his RIGHTFUL spot in the HOF.

 

WHo cares if he bet on games. People gamble on sports everyday if they didn't Las Vegas, Atlantic City and the likes would be out. I GUARANTEE Rose is not the only person that has bet on the game while being a coach, player or otherwise affiliated with a Major League team. He just got caught. He's paid his dues and he still deserves to be in the HOF.

 

UKMustang Fan as to your comment of he "only admitted to betting on baseball to sell a book" well isn't that the same thing Jose Canseco, Jeremy Giambi and the rest of the "Roid Crowd" are doing right now. They are only admitting to taking steroids to sell books and I'm sure Canseco will end up in the Hall at some point whther it be due to his accomplishments as a player or his uncanny ability to pump himself up with steroids and become friends with another steroid user and join the team of the "Bash Brothers.(Canseco/McGwire)" Look at Joe Torre's book where he constantly whines and complains about how terrible his years with the Yankees were and how all his players were prima donna's. He wrote a book and will profit from yet as a manager he is still great and will get into the HOF.

Criminals receive life prison sentences also, yet they get chances for parole. What Rose did was wrong and he knew it was wrong. He has been punished. I don't agree that the only appropriate punishment is a lifetime ban.

 

The way I see it, let him do it, after he's dead.

How do you know Canseco will not be in the Hall of Fame? Are you one of the voters? Don't think so. Not trying to start an argument just stating the facts. I don't like Canseco, I'm not taking up for Canseco but I do believe he should be in the HOF even if it is because of the time he let the ball bounce off his head and over the fence for a home run when he played for the Rangers. That was priceless and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame/Shame whichever they have room for him. LOL

Not only do I think Pete Rose should be in the HOF but he should be allowed back into baseball. But the will never happen while the screwball of a commissioner in running the league. Bud Seling will never allow Rose back into the game or the HOF. Pete Rose has done about as much good as Seling has done bad for baseball.

bigbluefan02--I agree with you 110%. Pete Rose will get into the HOF as soon as Bud Selig is gone. Hopefully Selig is gone before Rose passes because I would walk to Cooperstown to see Pete Rose inducted.

Absolutely not! The man is a lowlife loser, who only admitted to betting on baseball to sell a book. He broke a rule that had been in place for a long time, and needs to pay the price. If guys that do steroids aren't allowed in, neither should this loser. The fact that so many people in Cincinnati are such big fans of Rose is an embarrassment to the city.

I don't understand this logic. If you want him banned, then he should be banned forever. He is being banned because baseball does not want the person of Pete Rose (as compared to the accomplishments/stats of Pete Rose) honored at Cooperstown. I just don't see how it somehow becomes more appropriate/acceptable once he's dead.

If one pumped up steroid freak gets in, then Pete Rose should get in. The man never played less than 100% and his stats prove it. He deserves to be in the Hall.

 

Neither did Shoeless Joe. Neither is getting in and Shoeless Joe's case is much more compelling. Here's the thing w/ Rose, everyone talks about his incredible desire to win. How can you believe that he didn't bet against the Reds to win a bet??? For 10 years he lied about gambling on baseball at all, let alone the Reds. He was definitely in position to influence his bets. As manager, he had direct control on the outcome of games. I think that he is as sketchy as they come. At least w/ the steroid guys they did it for one reason, to become better players, ultimately rewarded by landing bigger contracts. You can't be sure that Rose's intentions were purely for the betterment of the Reds.

While Rose isn't enshrined their are many mentions and items that are Rose relics, if you will. He still deserves to be enshrined. This was more about MLB proving a point. Pete Rose was one of the top 3 players to ever play the game!

 

Rose isn't even close to being a top 3 player. Longevity doesn't breed greatness. The man who's record he broke hit a .363 for his career. Rose hit .303. He never hit for power, is one of the only leadoff hitters in history to not steal a base for an entire season, and was mediocre in the field. During the voting for players of the 20th century, he was voted in as the 9th outfielder...barely. He's an all-time great, but he's not in the top 20.

Come on, your talking about people deprived of personal liberties. Rose is being deprived of a privilege. He has no right to the hall, he gambled that one away.
