Can a 8th grader play middle school and varsity basketball?

Featured Replies

That's the bunch that still almost won the 8th grade tourney.

Yea. I believe Arnold was the only starter from that championship game still around their senior year. Young quit after his junior year, Smith transferred to Newport his sophomore year, Covington quit after his freshman year to focus on football, and I'm not sure whatever happened to their starting point guard.

How do these kids your speaking of transfer from one school to another and KHSAA rules them eligible to play? I thought that KHSAA had become stricter about moves being legimate.

Smith transferred to Holmes without ever seeing a minute of varsity ball...therefor he was ruled eligible.

Edmondson left Holmes after his junior year and was ruled eligible because of "special circumstances" that can't be discussed on BGP due to the rules.

When I was in 8th grade, Holmes killed us with Duran Jefferson, Nate, and Ryan Luster. They then moved them up to JV and we (St. Pius) ended up winning the public school tourney that year against Holmes (without their best players) out at Sharp middle school in Pendleton County.

There is no governing body over middle school basketball. Unless there an individual rule per the school district, there is no restriction. A 6th grader could play 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, JV, and Varsity. A lot of people think a JV player can't start varsity. Seen it at least three times this year.

Is anyone not surprised ETA was able to produce a 7-8 year old 8th grade Holmes basketball team photo???

I always love the "small school" argument.

But hey we're Ky. why should we start doing things the right way now. Might ruin our rep.....:isurrender:

First of all, there wasn't an "argument", simply an answer to a question posed, and I have seen many years where the SGroves, Dayton's, Ludlow's etc. had to utilize 8th graders in "roles" such as bench personnel simply to have enough players to compete. Secondly, I'm not convinced that "most" states don't allow it. You'll need to prove that one to me, and thirdly, what makes you the judge of "why should we start doing things the right way now" Is the right way simply your way?????????? We all don't have the enrollment of Highlands, and like it or not, small schools will be around a while.:irked:

I just don't think younger kids should be asked to play all the minutes that are involved with this practice. I do understand the small school issue, but I don't think that point doesn't hold water when the larger schools also employ this practice. Also 2 of the schools that you have mentioned that can't put a team on the floor, somehow have the numbers to put a football team on the field. How do you account for that? I have posted the OHSAA regulation on here, in a different thread, that bans middle schoolers playing varsity, and yes they have small schools, and yes those schools somehow field bball teams. We will obviously not come to an agreement on this issue, and that's fine. I am not a "judge" I do have an opinion that the KHSAA is very archaic in many of its regulations.

We'll simply agree to disagree with one final comment: Football players aren't necessarily basketball players, and there are in fact Ohio small schools that while they may have a team, they simply can't compete, because they are bodies....not players, and I agree whole heartedly with your KHSAA opinion.
