I'm happy that the loophole is closed, but it seems like an attempt to slow down creativity in play design. I have mixed emotions, both about the A-11 and the changing of rules to disallow the offense.

I posted the article for those that hadn't seen it. You now need 4 guys on the line with linemen numbers and the snapper can have an eligable number, but he can't go out for a pass.

The thinking is that the new rule will be that on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd downs a team will be required to have "lineman numbers" in the C, G, and T spots regardless of how far back the qb takes the snap.

Ah, I think the rule change is bad. I don't like the A-11 but I do admire the creativity of it. It's not like the offense was unstoppable so why ban it? It was a little gimmicky but still. Until it became a problem I saw nothing wrong with it.

But look at Chiefsmoke's post in #10, they used it for 10 years and they didn't know until recently that they could use it on every down.

 

I will look for the article from last year, but when the coaches out in Cali brought in their QB to show him the new offense, I remember that he asked his coaches if it was legal, they were surprised that they found a loophole well until now.

I just reviewed the latest press release from NFHS Meeting in INDY on 2/13/2009 and saw NO reference to A-11. :idunno:

That is because it is not there. They did not rule that the A-11 offense was illegal or ban it. So you will find not such wording. They changed the description of the SKF to the following.

 

The NFHS changed the SKF rule to say that on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Down, an offense must have at least 4 players wearing # 50 - 79 on the LOS, and only the Center can be wearing an Eligible jersey number, except for on 4th down, then all players can be wearing Eligible numbers, etc.

 

In the bold is the loophole that was being used. As far as ChiefSmoke's team using the loophole for 10 years I do think that is completely true. I believe they have been using that style of punt for 10 years and do run fakes out of it. The fact that it was not used as every down offense in and of itself basicly rules it out of using the loophole. The A-11 was based on using a rule (SKF) in a way it was not designed. The recs would hover around the LOS and then shift up and motion at the last minute to try to confused people on who was eligible. Some have claimed Lex Cath used the offense a few years ago in the playoffs. What Lex Cath used was the BYU, Emroy/Leroy, Ninja or any other name I am forgetting which just spreads the OTs out a mile. The OT still did not have eligible numbers.

When quarterback Jeremy George entered the Piedmont (Calif.) High School football coaches' office to talk to Kurt Bryan, he noticed an unusual formation on the dry-erase board.

At first, George thought the formation was meant for the punt team.

 

No, Bryan said, that's our new offense.

 

George looked back to the board and was a little confused.

 

"Initially, the first thought I had was, 'I'm pretty sure that's illegal,' " George said. "I've got to admit I thought it was a little crazy. I think most of the players thought it was crazy. A lot of people were a little skeptical."

 

And for good reason.

 

Bryan, Piedmont's coach, and Steve Humphries, the director of football operations, had developed an offense in which all 11 players on the field potentially are eligible to catch the ball. Though they weren't certain it was legal when they first concocted the idea, they were willing to implement it for the 2007 season.

How many schools in KY used this? Only one I knew of was Trimble Co.

Emince might have but Trimble was the only one I know of. There were about 12 schools listed on the A-11 web site that ran it. I do not remember seeing the above 2 posts ealier either. Not sure what happened there.

The only reason I'm OK with the rule change is because from talking to officials its a bear to try to officiate. If not for that, it should still be legal.

Trimble Co. ran this offense last year. Poynter has close connections to the guys in Cally.

I would love to see how they are going to use it past on 4th down with the rule change. Anything else they would be doing is what Spurrier, Leach, the guys at BYU and number of other places. The fact that 11 guys could have eligible numbers is the key to the offense and that part is gone past 4th down.

 

Now the crazy talk of A-11 schools forming a seperate football body or trying to get their states to ignore the new rule are not going to happen.
