I've tried to have this arguement with family members before, because I tend to view religion in general as a form of a cult. The problem is that the word cult IMO has a negative conotation, but is not necessarily a negative thing.

For me, if you look at the definition it is hard to say they aren't. BUT, that's just me.

Trace any religion back through time, and each denomination can place some roots into paganism, which really is the ultimate in "cults", IMO.

 

The root of Cult is the same as Culture, and thus, there can be no culture, without cults.

Yes, I call them a cult. Who is their founder? A man. I'm a Christian who attends a Southern Baptist Church whose founder was also a man and was God.

 

The Mormans will use the Bible but also uses other written material. Book of Morman/The Doctrine and Covenants/the Pearl of Great Price.

 

Their founder Joseph Smith claimed he found the Book Of Mormon in 1822 and translated it to English.

 

The Bible and the Book Of Morman disagree on certain key beliefs, but they give more precedence to their Book.

 

I disagree with several "Religions" but that doesn't make them wrong or me right.

 

I also disagree with the Baptists/Christians/Catholics/Church of Christs/Jehovah Witness/Islam on certain issues.

I'm not familiar enough with the beliefs of Mormonism to cast a knowledgeable vote.

 

About 15 years ago or so, I watched a documentary tape about the Mormon religion called the "God Makers" that certainly left the impression it was a cult. I had a co-worker at the time who was Mormon and he really wouldn't discuss the movie, which made me further suspicious. (I believe he, and many Mormons, were greatly offended by the tape and felt avoiding the discussion was better than trying to legitimize their religion to an uninformed outsider). I did some brief additional research back then and found out that this documentary greatly embellished some things about the religion, but that apparently some were (at least partially) true. Ultimately, it wasn't really that important to me and I stopped my research and have forgotten most of what I heard. I will say this, I've worked with several Mormons and each one was a great guy. Their devotion to family was/is unsurpassed. Never got into any deep religious discussions with them, but they most certainly didn't come off as cult-like fanatics.

I'm not Mormon but I have not heard of it, though I'd like to see it. Being such a new religion formed entirely in the United States, I have a particular fascination with the Mormon religion.

Of all the religions the Christian Faith proclaims Jesus Christ through the Bible. But there were other writings during the time of Christ that had eyewitness accounts of his Ministry. This including his miracles and ressurection.

I believe as long as you believe in God thats a good thing, whether you are a Morman/etc. But after reading the Bible and believing in its word I have 100% belief in Jesus as the only way to God, but there are many ways to Jesus.

Now THERE is an interesting statement that I would love to see you put in a thread and discuss.

I'll do a quick answer. Jesus states he is the only way to the Father. Thats easy. John 14:6

 

To find Jesus a person might hear a sermon/parents influence/friend/personal experince/spouse/church softball team/...we can name hundreds of examples where someone found the pathway to learning about Jesus. Key word is pathway because Jesus talks about this pathway to the Father and eternal life. Matthew 7:25 I believe, Momma asleep and its dark in here. :sssh:
