I have seen many of the boys and they are getting pumped for "down and dirty" and 7 on 7. I think we will see many unknown players step up and give the team a real chance to be playing atleast 3 weeks into the playoffs.

I watched wrestling during weight class Friday. It was both entertaining as well as promising. The football guys looked great and the basketball boys are learning some toughness. Track and baseball boys got a break due to a game and meet that night. I can't wait to see the boys in pads.

Cody Grant and Rodney Salyers looked outstanding. You'll have to ask Sam Hieneman what it felt like when Ralph Burchett body slammed him in about 3 seconds and leave him curled up in the fetal position for a few seconds. Caveman (Caldwell) and Caudill looked very good, too. Yes, Lil Ram and the younger boys have really stepped it as well. Lots of young talent and promise in the middle school kids as well as the underclassmen. "It's a great day to be a Ram!"

Ashland has a Wrestling team - it's a great winter sport. The "football weight classes" are my favorites to watch. It teaches linemen footwork, balance and leverage. It made my son a better lineman.

 

I'd like to see Raceland (and other local schools) start a wrestling team. The local competition would make us all better.

I agree on all accounts. I have often wondered why more schools in our area do not start a wrestling team. I wouldn't mind seeing it. Title 9 is the only reason that I have been able to come up with, I don't know that is the reason for sure, that is the only thing that I could see standing in the way.

Ashland's Tony Love is the football Defensive Coordinator and Head Coach for Wrestling. This is a combination that works pretty well for the Tomcats. Coach Love recruits some wrestling assistants including some dads with experience to coach the middle school team. I'm sure he would be willing to advise any loacal coach interested in starting a program.

 

As to title-9 concerns; wrestling is co-ed. Many teams around the state have female wrestlers. They fill in some of the lighter weight classes. In fact, there was a young lady that did pretty well at the state tournament in 2008.
