2009 should be interesting and fun for Ryle. They return a lot of talent at the offensive skill positions (QB, RB's, TE, WR) and had some nice WR talent on JV last year that will also help. But they lost several starters on OL and need to get bigger and stronger in that area. The offense was wildly inconsistent last year, but should be strong this year.

Defense is a huge question mark. They lose almost the entire starting defense, returning only two full-time players (a DB and a DE/LB) and a part-time player (DL). They will need some guys from last year's JV squad to step up in a hurry. They should be fine at LB and secondary, but again need to find some size on DL. Odd how a school Ryle's size has such problems finding big, beefy boys for the line. (They seem to pop out of the woodwork every year over at Boone! :D) Of biggest concern defensively is the possible loss of Coach Wolfe. That would hurt bigtime.

Bottomline is that if they can find some size on both sides of the line, they have a chance to be very good. Lacking that, it could be a tough year.

If my intel is reliable (and I've heard it from two very reliable sources) you don't have anything to worry about in re Wolfe.

I think Ryle needs to experiment a little more with the QB position. Although he's smaller in size than Hempel, I think Lonkard does a real nice job. He's very accurate and has quick feet. Ryle could potentially put together a decent team in 09. They just have to put the right people in the right positions and make intelligent play calls, which was their 08 downfall.

Putting Lonkard in at QB makes no sense. There is no logical reason for replacing Hempel, who started every game last year, for a more inexperienced and less skilled player. The reason for the inconsistent play of the offense last year was do to lack of experience and knowledge of the offense. For Ryle to be a good team next year, they need experienced people on the field, especially at QB.

Woolf would be a big loss.

Not sure where you are going with the less skilled player part.

Less skilled as a quarterback.

Lonkard is a very fine athlete and there is no doubt the coaches will find a way to use him next year, perhaps in the slot position where he had some success this year at the varsity level. But Hempel is, and should be, the QB of this team. He improved a lot throughout the course of last season and will be one of the better QB's in NKY next season. Ryle will have some nice talent at the offensive skill positions next year and if they can put together a solid OL, they have a chance to have an explosive offense.

What defense does Ryle run?

Everybody thinks Woofe runs a 52 but it is actually a 34.

As cooperstown mentioned above, Ryle has good skill players coming back that have varsity experience. The question mark will be the offensive and defensive lines. They did have several injuries to underclassman last year in these positions so if those guys can come back strong along with the backups from last year, it could be a good year for the Raiders. Ryle lost a lot of good defensive players, Nick and Gus Murray, Josh Lamping, Chris Brzinski, Jeremy Poe to name a few. Those guys will be missed but Logan Carney is a good defensive back that is returning. Court Mace, Logan Holman, Connor Coyle along with some others will be looked at to fill those positions. Ryle will be in the 2nd year of transforming their offensive so they should be more consistent when they have the ball.

Do they have a strong winter weightlifting program?

Do they have a strong winter weightlifting program?

Yes. A mandatory program that started several weeks ago. Obviously, they are missing some people due to other sports - basketball, baseball, etc. - and will continue to miss some of these guys throughout the Spring, but they are by and large kids that already keep themselves in good shape and take lifting very seriously.

You are really just playing semantics with that statement. His base is a 5-2, now if you put twins(2 receivers) to one side, or both, he then walks an E(now lb) out to the flats. This gives you the 3-4 look.

Now if you give him trips to one side, sometimes he will walk-out E and roll down safety, giving a cover 3 look. This leaves the backside E in place or a step off the line, so you could call this a 4-4.

The point is, that all good defenses are fluid and can give multiple fronts that is one key to their success.

The 5-2 he runs, he learned at CC from the d-coordinator who spents years running it at Princeton with Mancuso.
