Here's the Cliffs Notes. I went through a ton of tough loses to people I loved dearly early and often in my life. Most were in the group we classify as amazing people. Those that weren't had it end far too early for them to work it out. I needed something that forced me to look inward and make sure I made every day count. After years of looking I found it...

I think I could guess. But I won't.

I think I could guess. But I won't.

It was something right before my grandpa and mom were diagnosed and long before my brother took his own life. Luckily that moment along with meeting Mrs GT got me through a lot of things that can break anyone...

Not really. I understand.

Don't know if it is or if it isn't and don't think it is really vital to know that.

We are both doing it in honor of Christ who gave of his life and of God who gave of His Son so that we all can have eternal life.

That is the important aspect of it.

Now, there is Scripture that indicates that if you are not of right mind, you should not partake. There have been times I have not partaken because that Scripture scares me and I am not quite sure what it is alluding to.

According to my understanding this is pretty much true in the Catholic church as well.

No love huh?

Just kidding, obviously. But seriously, I do remember some of the things you're speaking of and can honestly say that dealing with things of that nature is how you define who you are.

If you no longer consider yourself a Catholic, do you currently have a denomination?

I have been a Buddhist since January 2001...

I spent a lot of my youth going to Catholic church and then my dad married into a Catholic family. I have been to a lot.

As a sidenote...in the years since I've been openly atheist, Catholic church is the only church I have attended.

This is possibly for a whole other thread...but how'd you come to Buddhism? Feel free to PM if you want.

 I'm not sure how to take your last comment...thank you...I think?

Same holds true for Catholics. Something unbelievably depressing for me is how cultural "Catholic" has become. It's less religious and more cultural

I don't understand why you feel it's depressing. I'll try to explain how I feel. I was baptized shortly after birth, and I was raised strictly Catholic. Very strict, traditional parish and Grade School experiences. I cannot fathom being anything other than Catholic. It's not just my faith, it's me.

cch can speak for himself but I don't think he was addressing you. I think he was addressing the same thing I was lamenting. THose who think their faith is in worship services/mass and not anything to do with them the rest of the week.

Did a lot of reading and soul searching on many religions, and found one that fit what I believed in...

Not quite either.

What I was speaking about is those who never attend Mass and openly disagree with what the Church stands for, yet consider themselves Catholic. Here's an example:

My father was telling me about a co-worker who had not been to Mass in ~8 years (and I believe was divorced multiple times with no annulment). The co-worker was at a Catholic funeral and, when some non-Catholic's who were there were confused about what to do around Communion time, the co-worker explained, "You can't receive because you aren't Catholic" and then he proceeded to go up himself. I mean, how Catholic is the co-worker really?

Ironically, that is the same way that I re-kindled my Catholicism. Took a secular philosophy class, and then did much independent reading on the Eastern religions, and found what I believed was the path to truth.

We did a Catholic discussion a year ago June, and I just repeat myself, but I'm bible based and the word "Mass'" isn't in the Bible. Now a lot of things are not in the Bible, but the Mass y'all partake in is pretty important in your Faith and deals with your church and I believe its the way you worship, and thats fine.

Clyde, I can go as deep as you want, if you keep asking.

In Alabama I never saw a Catholic church and thats a lot of our problems. Its the way we are raised most of us attended the church our family went to. But I've studied the Bible.

I respect anyone who comes on here with a dissenting opinion. I may challenge it sometimes (and that seems to ruffle the feathers of at least one poster) but I have nothing but respect for the person who is willing to dissent.

So, is your issue with the Catholic church that somehow our "mass" is missing something? Is it not official since you can't find it in the bible? I'm having trouble understanding what your concern/issue is but I'm intrigued by the path you seem to be taking us down.

What does your bible study tell you regarding the Catholic mass?

. I mean, how Catholic is the co-worker really?

How do we measure that?
