Ashland Tomcats and Boyd County Lions

Featured Replies

Well when your crowing about a 1 point loss to Russell that should tell you something. Seriously ballbrain does it not concern you that Ashland doesn't seem to graduate many basketball players? My concern is that we had a losing record last year, have lost 4 in a row to Rose Hill, and quite honestly I don't see us stocked with talent in the middle school, freshman, or sophomore classes. Since you and Coach Biggs seem to be on a first name basis maybe you could suggest that he get more involved in the feeder system.

For the record I think Biggs is a good basketball coach but something is up when player after player leave the program.

Curiosity and a little free time got the best of me. Here is the breakdown of the numbers of senior BB players from our area.

64th Dist Fairview 3, Boyd 2 ( if what I read on this thread is correct ) , RH 2, Ashland 1.

Other area schools Russell 2, Raceland 2, Greenup 3.

Looks like this is sort of a trend, by way of coincidence or whatever, no one around here is blessed with a lot of seniors right now. When you look over at the 62nd Dist Elliot, Morgan, and West all have 6 apiece while East has 3.

That's a good observation ballbrain. The problem with the comparison is that Boyd and Ashland would be considered larger schools, with a much larger talent pool. Fairview, RH, Raceland, even Russell, don't have near the number of kids in their feeder programs. Remember I'm talking quality not quantity. Some of the schools you listed lost kids to transfer. So really for comparison Boyd and Ashland are the only two area teams who have witnessed a mass exodus of kids quitting bball from this senior class. Most of the other schools you mentioned, this years class has not been large since they started as freshmen four years ago.

Their is still something wrong with Ashland and Boyd surrounding their programs. I personally don't think it's the coaches. Biggs is a good coach and Boyd's coach is in his first year. But trust me "something" or "someone" is bringing these programs to their knees.

1 DI talent: Keeton Belcher at Belmont that almost beat Duke last year in NCAA's.

1 DII talent: Tyler Mains who went to North Greenville University

2 DIII talents: Joey Verax who is winding down a great career at Transy and Mason O'hara at Thomas More

1 NAIA talent: Pat Elliott who played a season at Berea College

1 NAIA talent: Jon Elrod who went to Georgetown and I think played at least one season as a walk-on or ended up playing soccer.

That was very unusual talent pooled at one time at Pendleton.

lbbc, you seem to have at least a pedestrian knowledge of Bigg's time at Pendleton. Did he have a problem with kids leaving the program during his tenure in Pendleton?

Ballbrain, as shupupandplay stated it's tough to compare Fairview and Rose Hill to Ashland and Boyd due to student numbers. I'm not sure at Boyd but the problem seems deeper at Ashland than just the senior class. I'm not 100% sure but is Skaggs the only junior?

Plus last year we only had two seniors. For whatever reason nobody seems to play 4 years. Maybe it is more of a product of this generation.:idunno:

Hey Newman, someone needs to ask Ashlands radio announcers what they think. I think they've been around the program for a while, maybe they could shed some light on this subject. Just a thought........

I don't know they are pretty shy and won't say much against the Ashland program.:lol:

Newman, I'm not sure how long the radio announcers have been at Boyd. If someone from Boyd could get some insight from a couple of people who have been around that program for a while maybe that would produce some credible explanations. Once again just a thought.

I have to admit that I thought the same thing about the generation.

That doesn't make much sense though..... If they are true cat fans wouldn't they want to get to the bottom of this just like everyone else? I wouldn't expect them to say anything "against" the Ashland program anyway. Just thought they would have some insight. Maybe it is a bad idea IDK.

Oh I was just kidding I am sure they would tell what they think needs to be done and by who. They have for the past 20+ years.

lbbc, you seem to have at least a pedestrian knowledge of Bigg's time at Pendleton. Did he have a problem with kids leaving the program during his tenure in Pendleton?

Look at where the kids that he had ended up playing. They were the rare kid and their parents were truly committed to playing basketball. I don't recall any players of note leaving the program. And he was very hard on them. The parents though knew they had a special team there. A once in a lifetime team at Pendleton and were committed to their kids playing and having that chance to play at Rupp Arena.

The kids and parents put their OWN SHOOTING PRACTICE together on Sundays. Funny, most of the time, those were the 6 that were at it. The ones who didn't play, didn't come as much. I don't recall ever seeing a coach at one of these practices.

Tyler Mains shot 500 shots EVERY DAY from the first day that the season was over till October 15th. He took off only a handful of days during that time. When the school got a Shooting Gun, he upped his routine to 1,000 shots per day. Any of the Ashland kids shooting 1,000 shots a day? And I can absolutely guarantee that he did this as I was in the gym with him watching on a few days.

They played a ton of AAU ball getting up to the HS level. Mains and Elliott played on the same AAU team even though Patrick lived in Madison County and played about 100 games per year from late elementary through middle school.

Elrod's dad is Rick Elrod that was drafted by the Phoenix Suns out of Georgetown College. He has the genes.

Plus, a front line of 6'5", 6'5" and 6'8" helps a lot. Pendleton's varsity team this year MAY have 1-2 kids that exceed 6'0". MAYBE.

Buddy is great at identifying what fundamentals and skills the players need to work on and commits to doing that EVERY SINGLE DAY OF PRACTICE. Watching the same drills all the daggone time drove me about to boredom. But everyday they worked on the skills and fundamentals that this team needed to work on to get where they wanted to go. Total commitment by players, parents and coaches.

The juniors at Ashland are Skaggs, Conner Swift, Drew Royalty and Jimmy Alexander if my program is correct.

And wow! Lbbc your knowledge of the situation at Pendleton is impressive. Thanks for sharing.
