I didn't mean to leave anyone out they all are working there tails off, and all are dedicated from seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, and the 8th grader.

 

I never mentioned anything about making up a lineup/ I just stated that the freshman had a good year. Also the JV has a good year. Don't know why your so negative. I believe Gindelsperger is a junior.

My concern is that we had a losing record last year, have lost 4 in a row to Rose Hill, and quite honestly I don't see us stocked with talent in the middle school, freshman, or sophomore classes. Since you and Coach Biggs seem to be on a first name basis maybe you could suggest that he get more involved in the feeder system.

 

For the record I think Biggs is a good basketball coach but something is up when player after player leave the program.

Marooncat, everything you have stated is 100% correct but I can tell you that in a of those cases they couldn't wait to leave because of the situation that shutupandplay refered to.

I'm not even saying that I disagree with a lot of the comments made about how players get better. But it would be hard to hang all the blame for the " sins of the past " on Coach Biggs now wouldn't it? I'd like to give the man a chance and support him especially if in fact he did inherit the shortfalls that have been called out in this thread. I want to see Ashland win every time they go on the court and I'm all for doing the work that's necessary to get back to the point where they are a real threat to anybody they play. All I'm saying is that now that there is some space between where they are and where they want to be there is no short cut back. You take what you have and build the best team you possibly can, no excuses and certainly no moral victories.

A couple of years ago, there was a big and impressive article in the newspaper about Hager's Sixth Grade team winning over 50 games in a row in their years at Hager. It sounded great until I was told that the record was built by beating Ashland's other elementary teams and not by beating the best in the area.

 

I also believe that that same Hager team was sort of "tricked" into playing Rose Hill in a tournament, possibly at Russell (I do know that Ashland's elementary teams are forbidden from playing Rose Hill even in charitable tournaments). Needless to say, Rose Hill cleaned the undefeated Hager team by a rather big margin.

 

Assuming all this is true, it serves as a good example of why Ashland struggles at most all levels in basketball. You can't continually hide.

I really can't speak to why the guys you mentioned quit. Usually when somebody quits they have a laundry list of reasons why it was neccessary or justifiable for them to do that. I've never heard a reason that I thought didn't sound like an excuse. I've only talked to one of the guys you mentioned. But I was told that Hunter wanted to play this year but had vacillated about his decision untill it was not worth the 'make up work' he would have to do. I also heard that he was definitely playing next year. Not much help for the here and now but I believe that to be accurate.

Really? Care to elaborate on Hager's side of the primary issue? Did they and do they dodge RH or not? Or possibly, instead of the "trick" in the tournament scenerio which did happen but possibly may have been a different year, did they lose during that "streak" to RH but afterward declare it a practice game so they wouldn't have to count it? Be honest and forget the spin.

Did all these players quit under Biggs (I'm not close enough to the program to know)? If so, I have heard that Biggs does run very tough practices (of course, this is just what I have heard). If these players quit because the practices were too hard then it is not the coach's fault - these players would not be the "winning" players needed for the team to be successful anyway. If they left because of limited playing time then let 'em go. It is in a coach's best interests to play the best players. No coach is going to reduce a players clock if it hurts his chance of winning. The best players play the most, if you want more clock just play harder and earn it - or quit.

 

Bottom line - too many high schoolers are spoiled and expect things they haven't yet earned. I respect coaches who do not cater to them or their parents. I guess I'm just old school
