Apparently, the child was using Creatine, which his mother described in answers to interrogatories as a "muscle mass" supplement, although she claims he stopped using in July.

One of the chief side effects of Creatine is dehydration, because the compound increases muscle mass with the rapid hydration of muscle cells. Unless Stinson knew that Gilpin was supplementing with Creatine, then I see this being a trial issue as to his cause of death.

 

Creatine IS legal as far as I know, but it is a compound that has only been studied extensively for about the last 10 years.

 

And guess what substance Creatine retains?? Yep, water.

 

Creatine naturally occurs in foods such as steak, etc. in the body. An overloading of creatine can take up to a month to be flushed entirely from the body.

 

Creatine has commonly been known to cause dehydration.

 

No autopsy and this.........you better have one pretty smoking gun.

I understand your point and hopefully he didn't mean it, in that context. I can't recall which network, but they showed him speaking on his steps and making that statement.

 

At this point, he's facing criminal and civil charges and it will impact his future. I hope he didn't intend his comments, to be meant in that manner but from seeing it I feel he meant "he was hurting also", both in the loss of this young man and the allegations against him.

 

Nothing can undo the tragedy but hopefully something positive/corrective, can result and this never happen again to anyone.

You have every right, to comment on the situation. I can't imagine the grieving and what the family is feeling right now. I can assume his friends, classmates, teammates and coaches are doing the same.

 

Finding the cause of the death won't bring back this young man but it may help prevent it from happening to another.

It draws water away from the organs to the muscle cells and if you don't drink enough water while taking it you can experience stomach cramps which can be mistaken for dehydration. There are those that claim it causes dehydration but that just doesn't make sense to me. If it cause the muscle cells to hold water how can it dehydrate you? If you take creatine with plenty of water you shouldn't have any issues.

Many of us are emotional at the death of this young child. Last year, our team almost lost one of our football players due to a freak accident on the last play of practice. Another player tripped and stumbled into him stomach head first. What was initially thought to be bruised muscles ended up being an intestinal rip that one hospital didn't diagnose at all and the second one had to do emergency surgery on him. It was a very emotional time for the players and for the coaches and other adults involved.

 

Several things are certain. Unless any of us has lost a child in this manner, we don't understand the feelings of the parents. Second, unless any of us has been in the place of this coach, we can't understand what he is going through, either.

There are some potential jurors who are going to see the media statements the way Fatman sees them. If I had been his defense attorney, I am not sure that those are the comments I would have permitted him to make.

But if you take creatine and you are engaging in strenous exercise, and thus sweating out that much needed water, then it can become an issue. I should rephrase what I said. Creatine does not CAUSE dehydration, but it can exacerbate a dehydration problem by drawing water away from where it is vitally needed.

 

Taken with plenty of water there should be no issues, I agree. But for athletes that are frequently dehydrated during the normal course of practice, it can be a cause for concern.

I guess that's where I'm coming from as well. He wasn't saying "look how bad I have it", just worrying about his and his family's future. Is there anyone here who wouldn't be concerned about having to give up the career that they love?

 

I think the comments may rub some people the wrong way but there are always two sides to every story. This man has had his livelihood stripped from him for, in his mind, doing his job. I'm not sure I'd have chosen those words, but he is a human, he is allowed to have feelings too.

 

Right now I'm sure those feelings are centered around the loss of one of his "family" and also that he may never be able to do what he loves again. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

I see what you mean. I've never been there for a soccer game so I'm not real sure of the setup.

The lawyers for the Plaintiffs in the wrongful death civil case are trying to force Stinson to give deposition testimony.

As you all know, when a person is indicted he has the right to invoke the 5th Amendment and not testify against himself. I don't think he'll be forced to give a deposition here, although the law is somewhat up in the air on this particular issue.

 

I would note that Stinson spoke voluntarily to both LMPD and to JCPS investigators, and those statements have been furnished. He also offered to testify under oath before the grand jury, and I am sure that the Plaintiffs' attorney and family could have had some influence with the prosecutor had they really wanted that testimony.

 

The civil case is already scheduled for trial and has been ongoing for 4 months. The criminal case just started and no trial date is set. Does this smack of trying to twist Stinson's arm on coughing up money by using a criminal indictment?

Hearsay, I understand what you are talking about when you say some may see it his position because they have been wrongfully accused or made a scapegoat. And again I don't have a problem with him proclaiming his innocence and using the facts to support his case against the charge. My problem is with his trying to convince people he is a victim in this situation.

Yes he may lose his job. He may never coach again. I personally hope neither of these happen. I don't think he is guilty of this crime. I wouldn't even have a problem with the statements if it wasn't for the terrible timing. It just looks like he is trying to garner sympathy. When I read the comments they seam self centered and disrespectful to the family of the deceased child.

Again, I know I am hypersensitive. I just can't believe everyone else isn't also.
