Anyone have any details on this game? I caught the score on the radio with only seconds left in the first half and Williamsburg was up big(maybe by 15). Whitley must have made a big comeback to get this district win on the Yellow Jackets' home court.

Whitley came out flat. Williamsburg wasn't missing anything. Taylor and Cunningham both had big games and made some long shots to get the colonels down early. At the start of the fourth the colonels were down by 4. They played well to catch up and tie the game to go into overtime. Whitley pulled out to a 4 point lead with a couple missed shots by the jackets and they pulled away with a couple free throws and a final layup to win by 7. Big win for the colonels!

Whitley County did start out the game playing awful, and it stayed that way until the fourth quarter! They gave up a lot of three point shots to Williamsburg, and allowed Teague to get several put backs.

 

Whitley was actually down nine going into the fourth quarter. They were down 15 midway through the third, as well.

 

Williamsburg should have won the game. Whitley County obviously wanted it a little more.

Williamsburg looked like they didn't want to be there. I'm glad Whitley won because their kids played harder.

Mikey Storms played a great game and stepped up when Whitley needed a boost. Jamie Lebanion & Mike Crawford battled in the 4th. to tie the Jackets at 62 all. Williamsburg got the ball after a timeout with 13 seconds on the clock, the guard drove the ball between 3 Whitley defenders, tossed up a horrible shot, missed, and after a struggle for the rebound, time ran out and the game went into overtime. I am a Whitley fan at heart so I am pleased with the outcome of the game but could someone please explain to me why, during those last 13 seconds of the game, did Williamsburg not pass the ball inside to one of the open big men? Both Pettit and Teague were under the goal wide open when the guard drove in between 3 Whitley players and tried to score. Poor guard play cost Williamsburg this game. It really hurts W'burg not having a true point guard IMO...Tough loss for W'burg, the Jackets are better than most on here think...

Why didn't the coach bench him?

No disrespect intended, but the final 13 seconds did not go that way. Cunningham did try to beat defender(s) off the dribble and put up a shot. It was not a bad shot at all, actually it was good look. Time did not run out while scrambling for the rebound. cunningham got the offensive rebound and had a 2nd attempt at winning the game. His 2nd shot was also a good shot. I'd want Cunningham taking the last shot or 2 for W'burg any time. Foul shooting was what cost W'burg this game, you can't shoot in the 10-22 ball park and win close games. Whitley played hard. W'burg played hard. It was a great game, a great crowd, and what high school sprts and rivalries are all about. Only reason W'burg jumped out in the 1st half was because they shot about 66% from the field. These teams are pretty even and either could win if they match up in the tourney. If they do, I'd like a different outcome, but I'd sure like to see as good a game again. Also like to add that fans from both schools were well behaved.

Agreed. Thats what I saw. The player who led Williamsburg in scoring took the big shot.Thats the way it should happen.

 

Just like to say, way to go Michael Crawford. He had his head busted open by an elbow, got bandaged up quickly, and returned to the floor to give his usual gutsy effort. Way to go Colonels!

No disrespect taken and you are correct about the free throws, many were missed, but I saw the last 13 seconds differently, the guard drove inside and at least 3 defenders collapsed on him. There was no way that he was going to get off a decent shot and he didn’t either time. Maybe I would see it differently had not both big men been open and he didn’t have a choice but to shoot. IMO Williamsburg does not utilize their size advantage to the fullest. I don’t want to be bashing any players, both teams played well and a rematch at District could go either way.

I thought Williamsburg has a great game plan (packing in the zone) but as the game wore on, Whitley figured out how to score and started hitting some outside shots. Williamsburg never adjusted when Whitley started scoring.

 

There was nobody else on the floor for Williamsburg that I would had take the last shot, Cunnigham had made several tough shots all night long and he has a knack for that. Unfortunately for the Jacket it did not fall. Williamsburg never really handled the pressure Whitley used in the second half, and coupled with the poor free throw shooting sealed their own fate. The game was Williamsburgs to lose and that is just what happened.

 

In over time the 3 pointer by Storms ended the game, when that went in you could see Williamsburg hang their heads, they immediately turned it over and Whitley scored, which sealed it. I though Whitley did a good job holding the ball and not giving Williamsburg a chance to get back in it in overtime.

 

I don't see them meeting in the district: Here is how it shakes out in my opinion;

 

1. Corbin

2. South or Whitley

3. Whitley or South

4. Williamsburg

 

1 plays 4

2 plays 3

 

So for them to play it would have to be in the championship, and I just don't see Williamsburg upsetting Corbin even on their home floor. (Although history does have a way or repeating it self sometimes, but not this year)

I don't know that he needs to take more shots, but I do think he needs to attack the basket more, with about the same amount of shots, which will soften the defense and open up the outside for the the other guys. It would also open it up for Storms, Crawford and Lowrie.

I think Cunningham could be a much better point if he had a little more disipline in his game. He really gives the defense fits slashing to the bucket, and I would agree that he is more a two than a one but on his team he is the guy who needs to be handling the ball.
