I heard one of the Williamsburg players saying that Coach called a play during the timeout to get the ball inside but that the guards didn’t run the play.

 

If this is true, maybe the fact that the guards had been shooting all night, and it would be expected that Cunningham would try to get the last shot off, was the basis behind the thought process when the coach decided to run a play to get the big men open and have one of them go for the last shot. I’m sure that Baker had his defense ready for Cunningham to shoot and that is why they collapsed on him as he went in for the shot.

Cunningham got off a good shot. The Jackets would have been down 15 if he had not scored 26. Crawford always plays hard. Jeremy Daniels changed the momentum of the game with some big shots. LeBanion is the differance between these two teams. LeBanion is to strong for anybody on Williamsburg to handle. He needs to take more shots.

 

Having scored 26 in the game is not a reason to have a player take a last minute shot when he isn’t open. You could apply the same reasoning for taking the shot from the inside considering that Teague scored 31 against Lynn Camp and he made all but a couple of his shots last night. And yes, had Cunningham not scored 26 Williamsburg would have lost by more but had Terry not scored 19 or Teague 17 Williamsburg would have also lost by more than 7. It's this "one player can do it all" mentality that hurts Williamsburg the most.

I have to agree with Black Jack on this one. It seems that selfish play is what has plagued the Jackets for the last couple of years. At the beginning of the season they worked together and got some well deserved wins, but that seems to be taking a back seat. I heard from a girl (not going to say how they know, but they have knowledge of what was said) that the players did not run the play the coach wanted. There's not time with a few seconds left to bench the player that has just disregarded your play, but that is not how I believe coach wanted the game to end. Why not utilize your fellow players who are open instead of trying to take on the entire team? The Jackets do their best when they work together - they have the ability to win games like this.

 

I must say I'm proud of the Colonels for their win, and hope they continue to do well. They've got some great boys on that team that seem to work together on the court. Let's hope the Jackets figure this out fast. It's not who gets the most points, but if the team is successful.

I would agree with you on that point for sure, but I think all teams are that way. In Whitley's case, they have no other choice than to play as a team. If they don't; 1. they won't win 2. they will find out just how comfortable the padded seats most schools have now are. 3. the team itself will take care of the problem.

 

I am not sure that Coach Robinson has the respect of the players if they are blantly not running his plays. If that is true, then that player should not be on the floor.
