Utah is very good and has some very impressive wins. They have wins over TCU, Oregon, Oregon St., BYU and Alabama. If I were a voter, I would have to put them #1.

 

After recalling that b/c of what you put I have to agree. I would also vote them number 1 even if it's only to prove how dumb it is not to have a playoff.

I voted no for the fact yes they finished undefeated and beat an iffy Bama team, but it shows why their needs to be a playoff system and honestly I know it will never happen but between Utah finishing undefeated, USC looking so impressive in their blowout over Penn State and whoever wins the national championship game there should be a 3 way split between Utah, USC, and either UF or OKLA IMO for the national championship.

The question is nebulous at best and irrelevant. Best team in the country when? Over the whole season? In a snapshot right now? Best by any objective or subjective standard? What? The 2007-08 Giants were not the "best" team in the NFL but won the Super Bowl. Therefore, they were the best by the only standard that matters. The question posed by the thread was does Utah deserve a slice of the title. I say they "deserve" it. Their wins list is is impressive. It is as impressive as Florida's or Oklahoma's. They certainly "deserve," at minimum, a shot at beating all comers.

 

If they were to play today, I think Utah would beat Texas, probably beat Oklahoma, matchup well with Florida but probably lose, and lose to USC. That's just me.

You can find flaws with any playoff system, but at least with a playoff the champion is decided on the field. The BCS is a popularity contest at best.

After USC dismantled Penn St., many on here were claiming they should get a share of the national title. Now many people want #6 Utah to leapfrog not only the national championship winner, and #3 Texas (assuming they beat OSU), people also want them to jump #5 USC who had an equally impressive win the day before. I do not see the logic in this, and if any team were to get the AP title, it would have to be Texas or USC. Therefore, I vote no for Utah getting a share of it.

Much like they year when Smith had Utah unbeaten, I believe that was 2004? I could be wrong. But Utah could get in the discussion after their impressive win.

It won't happen because they are too far down in th AP, but this Utes team is one of the best in the nation and the MWC is underrated as a conference. Only one team will finish this season undefeated; the Utah Utes deserve championship consideration.

 

I hope a bunch of these guys come back becuase if so, they will be highly ranked next year and maybe get their shot at the national title if they can do this again.

The ACC is a lot better than people give them credit for, the Big East isn't very good this year, and the Big Ten teams do alright as long as they don't play Southern Cal or Ohio State doesn't play an SEC school.

I don't agree with you here. Utah played 6 bowl teams (TCU, BYU, Colorado St., Oregon St., Air Force and Alabama). They also scheduled Michigan at Michigan (ranked in the AP Poll when Utah played them), Oregon St. and played Alabama on a neutral field and won all of these games. This is a pretty good schedule.

 

I also think that Utah would have gotten pressure on Wilson regardless of the o-line situation. You don't get 8 sacks and that much pressure throughout a game unless you are really good, especially against a team like Alabama. 21 first quarter points given up have nothing to do with the o-line situation either. That is on the defense, which could not slow down Utah early.

 

They beat everyone on the schedule and no other FBS team can say that. I think that they desrve consideration for the national title. I don't think they will get a split title because they have too far to climb, but what Utah has done this year is impressive IMO.

Almost everyone beat Michigan this year so that is pointless, they didn't beat Alabama at full strength and look at the sacks they had that game compared to what Bama had with a full O-line, BYU could only beat 0-12 Washington by 1 point and got dismantled in their bowl (they were way OVERRATED). Oregon State, Air Force, and TCU were good but 4 good games (Bama still good team just not at full strength) isn't nearly enough for a national title.

I guess I can agree with you in one respect. Utah can have a great season with being National Championship great.

 

I will say this however; if a Big East, ACC, or Big 10 had gone undefeated this year and won their bowl game, we would be calling them National Champions. Utah, with what they have done with their schedule, is at least as impressive and they won't get a shot at the title. The system stinks!

 

I am nit-picking here, but BYU is a good team. They beat Washington on the road and beat Air Force on the road. They drilled UCLA. They are a good team, IMO.
