Top 20 snubs

Featured Replies

Which teams do you feel should be ranked in the top 20 and are not? IMO, the most glaring snub is Christian Academy Louisville. CAL could easily be one of, if not the best, team in the state. Franklin County and Simon Kenton are a couple others that stand out. Who all do you feel should be included?

Those are three good candidates...

CAL is 8-0, with impressive wins over Notre Dame by 18 and over #4 Elizabethtown.

Simon Kenton is 6-1, with a win over Rockcastle County and only a 4 point loss to Butler as the lone blemish on their resume.

The most glaring omission from the Bluegrasspreps.com poll, though, is Mercy. They have lost two - to Montgomery County by 7 and to an Ohio team - but they've beaten Butler, Conner, and Lexington Catholic!!

Notre Dame (6-1) actually might be the most glaring omission, now that I think of it. They lost to CAL by 18 (another reason CAL should be included), but they also slammed Lexington Christian - by 23!

Where's Rowan County? They're 6-0, with a 20 point victory over Boone County, who's 6-1 and probably should be considered for the BGP top 20 as well.

Rockcastle County is 6-2, with two losses to powerful Simon Kenton and ranked Lincoln County by a combined 13 points...They've already beaten powers Wayne County and Allen County-Scottsville.

Central Hardin is one of the best girls' programs in the state, and is 6-2 with a 2 point loss to #4 Elizabethtown and a 4 point loss to #7 North Hardin. This is probably a top 10 team, folks.

Paducah Tilghman (6-1) has only lost one game, by a point, to Central Hardin at the Hopkins County Central Holiday Classic. In OVERTIME.

There's a few that merit strong consideration...

I wouldn't rank either of these right now, but two teams to watch: Sacred Heart is 4-1, with the lone loss a 7 point loss to Highlands. I don't think I would have them in my top 20 right now, but they've got to be lurking close by. The other is Boone County , which is 6-1, but who lost by 20 to Rowan County.

Franklin County looks to have the complete package - depth, speed, and size. They're 5-1, but a loss to Madison Central will probably keep them out of the top 20 until they show they can beat a heavyweight.

Conner (5-1) also bears watching...they have been beating up on NKY teams, but lost to Mercy by 10 when they stepped out of their neighborhood. Between now and the end of January, they'll have several opportunities to make their case with two games vs. Simon Kenton, and one each against Boone County, Notre Dame, and Highlands.

Right now, I'd probably add CAL, Central Hardin, Notre Dame, and Rowan County...

I'd drop out Warren East (4-2, with losses to unranked Christian County and unranked Wayne County, though both are quality teams), Ohio County (hammered by Breathitt in their first game vs. a ranked opponent), Johnson Central (6-2, with a loss to Pike County Central), and #10 Henderson County (slammed by #18 Marshall County).

CAL might be the best team in the state right now. They've beaten some really nice teams.

I haven't gotten a chance to see Iriqouis play this year though, how are they looking?

Looks like you can add a win vs. #8 Montgomery to CAL's resume.

I am sure you will be seing CAL in the top 20 soon.

Campbell County could be considered

SK & Rowan should be in the top 20.

I believe that CAL, Notre Dame, and Simon Kenton should all be ranked and that Boone County, Franklin County, Rowan County, and Central Hardin should also receive a ranking or serious consideration.

Of course, the "snub" of CAL wasn't intentional, simply a lack of awareness outside of Louisville and Lexington. The Courier-Journal and the Herald-Leader included CAL in their preseason rankings. Even then, the C-J preview had a discrepancy. CAL was identified in the article by local 7th region coaches as co-favorite with Manual and with Mercy as a dark horse candidate. However, in the poll of coaches across the state, Manual, Mercy, and Sacred Heart were all ranked ahead of CAL at #21. It's tough to get to Diddle when other teams aren't exactly easy wins on any given night: Assumption, J-town, Eastern, etc. I realize this is also true of some other regions.

BluegrassPreps girls' basketball preview stated that six teams in the 7th region could be ranked among the top 25 in the state, yet the actual BGP poll included only one 7th region team, Manual. That seems odd. Perhaps this is because one person writes and sbumits the preview while many are involved in creating the weekly ranking?

Especially in preseason, three factors probably weigh heavily in rankings: last year's record/performance, a traditional powerhouse reputation, and subjectivity that understandably favors teams in one's own area.

Fortunately, tournaments such as the Republic Bank (Lexington Catholic) Holiday Classic tend to provide some clarification, at least for the moment. There's a long way to go.

Campbell County could be considered

Cambell has a nice squad, but their not top 20 material IMO.

They beat Male tonight to advance to the finals of the Lady Rocket Invitaitional, where they will play Anderson County for the championship tomorrow night. Should be a good one!

CAL is playing really well!!!

Central Hardin is NOT a top ten team.

Have you seen CH? I haven't, just asking.

All I know is that they're beating everyone except two teams ranked in the top 10, and those two teams beat them by a total of just 6 points...sounds like either a) you're saying E-town and North Hardin have no business in the top 10, or b) you're saying that playing those two within a combined 6 points doesn't mean that CH is playing toe-to-toe with teams of that caliber...

After watching Franklin County tonight, they're no top 20 team. YES, they are VERY GOOD. But they can't shoot straight at the line (13 of 29 tonight, about 60% on the season) and have no serious outside threats. Despite a significant size advantage, they could only outrebound a younger, smaller South Oldham team by just two. Again, they're a VERY, VERY GOOD team and will beat an awful lot of folks this year...but I can't think of one of the teams we are discussing that I would move out of the rankings for them.

Didn't Caldwell, not Campbell, beat Male?

Didn't Caldwell, not Campbell, beat Male?

Yes, I believe Caldwell Co. is in the Lady Rocket Invitational.

Campbell Co. won the Mt. Dew Shootout at Mason Co. and will compete in the Queen of the Bluegrass after Christmas.

I have seen Central Hardin play. Playing North Hardin and Etown close is good for them. The seven teams they have beaten have a combined 21 wins...3 per team. Not exactly the toughest schedule in the state.

They will continue to win games and I wish them luck. They are just not good enough to be in any top ten poll.

Rockcastle County is 6-2, with two losses to powerful Simon Kenton and ranked Lincoln County by a combined 13 points...They've already beaten powers Wayne County and Allen County-Scottsville.

Both of Rockcastle losses were overtime games. They won convincingly at the Corbin Tourney. Let's see how they do this year at the New years tourney in Bowling Green. Last year they won that also.
