Nothing wrong with a little school spirit. The fact that hardly any students attend Highlands sporting events is a perfect example of why they should hold pep rally's more often. Having a pep rally or not having a pep rally really has nothing to do with a team's preparation. That takes place on the field during the week prior to the game. Taking an hour out of a week to get the student body excited doesnt take much effort.

I was speaking in generalities. I wasn't factoring in the jinx.

I'm not a fan of the pep rally either. Maybe Dale is rubbing off on me. I love the send offs, the community (when they take it upon themselves to put up signs and not expect someone to do it for them) involvement, and then of course the football family that does everything else. Concentrate on the game before the game and celebrate afterwards.

Many years ago we had bon fires and rallies. These days, it's more along the lines of send-offs, like mentioned above.

Yes, not every school in the state expects to be playing in the state championship every year. This is a special occasion for these kids, it's too get people excited for the game and also show the players the support they've got.

Bell County has had a rollercoaster week of emotions with the great victory over Boyle County, followed a little over 12 hours later with the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 3 Bell County JROTC students and one 2007 graduate....in uniform on their way to represent Bell HS in the Middlesboro Christmas parade. Now on the day of departure....NO SCHOOL! SNOW!!....and now no rally, but just the send off that is always special at BCHS. Coach Hilton will have the Bobcats focused as usual. It will be all business now...closing the deal. Go Bobcats! Bring the Title Back to Log Mountain!

I think the Pep Rally makes a lot of sense for smaller communities. While I agree that there is still work to be done, it is pretty special for a small town like Hazard to be able to rally around their school and feel good about their community.

 

The same for Belfry when we did it. In small towns like those our football teams mean a bit more IMO. The whole community can take pride, sorta like in the movie, Friday Night Lights. ("Make no mistake, we are in the business of protecting this town.")

 

While I think the above is a bit much, the theme itself really exists.
