My church used Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, if I recall the study correctly.

It is a really good program. And to back up the program Ramsey has a radio program as well to continue the lessons.

I should have read all the comments as others have already mentioned it.

That is not the topic of this thread. Mr. Fundamental asked for assistance, not criticism.

I'm not criticizing anything. I'm stating my opinion, which is what Mr. Fundamental sought when he asked for assistance. And it's entirely on topic.

There are criteria though before my church will carry through with this class.

  1. The curriculum has to be Biblically Based
  2. The Curriculum has to reach all members of the congregation...i.e. young adult-through senior citizen

Please tell not only a source but why you would recommend it, if you would please.

No opinion was asked on this. Its a requirement. Have you been through a Bible-based finance class? If not, then how are you qualified to say that the Bible is a bad guide?

My mistake in assuming that I was free to voice my opinion and that Mr. Fundamental was seeking others' opinions. Mr. Fundamental seemed to be okay with the response, but now we're getting off topic, so I digress.

I have not been through a Bible-based finance class; however, as I understand it the Bible was written thousands of years ago. Similarly, I believe that times have changed over that extensive period of years. While the Bible's concepts are still valid and important to society, I do not feel that it offers the best financial advice to today's investors. I am not questioning the credibility of the Bible as a whole - just the financial aspects.

Additionally, I did not state nor imply that I was more qualified than any on this board. I simply expressed my view that the Bible may not offer the most sound financial advice for today's world.

Finally, I have never stated that the Bible is a BAD guide to financial resources. Quite frankly, I do not have enough experience in basing financial decisions on the Bible, and would never discredit it. I simply stated that there are probably better alternatives - some of which seem to have been stated in this thread.

Feel free to inform me as to why my opinion is wrong.

I think what HHSDad is saying is the need to use a Bible based program was a given in the original request for assistance. Questioning that given paramater that Mr F set for his program isn't assisting with the issue he was needing help with.

It was as if he has said "I need a dog, it must be a brown dog with white feet". And then another poster spending time telling him that a brown dog with white feet is a bad idea and maybe he should get a white dog.

I'll respectfully disagree (self serving since I questioned it as well).

I think asking how a finance program whose intent is to educate on stated items such as managing debt and handling estate planning can be biblically based is a logical question to ask. Just because he stated it as a requirement doesn't mean it can't be questioned.

If prior to your "dog" example he said "my church is starting a program to help the blind get around and ...." then your requirements you wouldn't tell me I couldn't question why you needed a brown dog, right?

I agree. He wanted specific advice on how to meet his goal of helping his church develop a bibically-sound financial class - not whether such a class was of any legitimate value.

The Crown Financial Ministries class you recommended is sound and fits those goals. :thumb:

Mr. Fundamental stated that there were 2 goals of the classes.

1 was to spread the Bible's knowledge to everyone and let it be a part of our everyday lives.

The other was to educate everyone, both young & old, about how to handle their finances ranging from estate planning to debt management.

My apologies Mr. Fundamental, as I did not intend to steer your thread down this path. Apparently people are ultra-sensitive & a little bit on edge in the P&R forums.

Good luck to you & your church's mission. :thumb:

I think Mr. F took the questioning as it was intended.

Thanks to all that have voiced their opinion! I will let you know what the church decides to do. We are trying to tackle a very difficult problem down is Southeastern Ky with proverty and the best ways to deal with it.

I will let you know how the program goes and will be more than glad to PM anyone that wants the material in whatever program we choose.

As far as the other commentary;) I think that it would be best to start another thread, questioning if the Bible is relevant or not. Maybe I should start that one!

Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University is incredible. I heard Ramsey speak at Catalyst this year and he was unbelievable. That being said, his program is somewhat expensive to initially invest in. And if you live in a poorer area and have church members that can't swing the materials (or the church can't afford to provide them) then it's probably not for you.

Crown Financial, however, does great work and is very inexpensive. You can host one of their one day seminars for around $250 and it only costs $25 per person to register and that covers all the materials. They do an excellent job.

You can't go wrong either way. Both are excellent programs, bible based, (and yeah the Bible is still VERY relevant on financial matters), and will bring a blessing to any who take part.
