Parenting Harder as they get older or not

Your kids have never gone to ANY sleepover?

Nope. I just don't see the point of it. There have been very few times that kids have slept over at our house.

To me, sleepover=guise for shenanigans and trouble.

When you say sleepover does that mean staying the night with a best friend, or a few friends?

Both. My kids have slept over at relatives but never with friends.

My kids are socially adept but when it is time for bed, we lay our heads down at home.

Wow. I couldn't imagine not staying with my friends when growing up, it was a big part of my growing up.

Me too but times are different. From the time I was in grade school, I used to leave home in the morning and not come home until dinner. I can't imagine my kids doing that today.

If I got caught with beer as a kid, the cops told my parents and that was pretty much the end of it. Today, a kid is scarred for life for doing anything. There is everything to lose and nothing to gain. Parenting today is constant weighing of risk vs. reward.

I agree it's all about how the parents deal with the kids. I'm not one to say what way is right or wrong but I was brought up totally opposite.

I had very open parents and was allowed to do about anything I wanted. A lot of my friends parents were also very lenient and thought learning from mistakes was the best way. I'm still a young pup but I turned out fine. I didn't have any problems with the law or such, and we weren't exactly saints.

That is kind of my point. The mistakes are costlier these days and what wasn't trouble with the law when I was growing up, certainly is today.

My kids have made mistakes, too, and have learned from them. But, they have also had me as a parent with definite limits which has made it easier for them to know what is expected, to know what is allowed and to be safe and secure in that knowledge and those surroundings.

My kids do everything that other kids do but we made a decision when they were young that sleep overs had more risk than reward. That is the only reason.

Also, kids schedules are so structured that I don't know when they would sleep over these days. I complain abut the pace of life but we go right along with it. I was talking to another parent about it last night and we agreed that there just isn't enough down-time. Between school and sports, there is very little time left.

Same here :thumb:

My parents knew that when I got to a certain age there wasn't much they could do to keep me from doing something I truly had my mind on.

I'm kind of like you. I was no saint, I'm still far from it. My parents didn't always agree with what I was doing but when they laid down to go to bed at night, they knew exactly where I was and exactly what I was doing.

I would have gotten in 10 times more trouble for getting caught lying to my parents than I would have for being arrested or something like that. All they asked from me was 100 percent honesty.

Same here.. I always told my parents everything. It may have take us a little longer and a few random detours before we got in bed but I was always where I told them I'd be.

My parents remembered what it was like to be young and knew what I was doing. The promoted safety above everything else. My mom and dad made the consequences of certain things clear to me and then let me make my own decisions in life.

I had a couple buddies that had very little freedom when they were younger. They weren't allowed to do much. When they moved off to college all the freedoms that came along with not living at home caught up with them. They quickly failed out of college and are now back at home.

You mean the boy's PARENTS don't you!! We must all be crazy!!! :jump:

Not always. I have had a job of some sorts ever since I was 14, so I paid for most of those things myself. My parents felt that if I was responsible for my own "entertainment", then I would feel better than to just have it handed over to me. I never thought of taking a limo, I just gave my truck a good shine and wax and drove it.

Yep, or some of the ones I know are the ones who got into BIG trouble as soon as they were on their own.

Good for you . . . and your parents!!

My daughter works too but with all the school activities she doesn't get a lot of hours. I worked when I was her age and felt it's a very important skill to learn but I also want her to stay involved with school activites so we've compromised . . . she works 2 evenings a week and I "suppliment" her income on a regular basis.:sssh:
