I left before the game was completed, but Boone won by double digits but it was tightly contested throughout. Ryle had 4 point edge at halftime which should have been more if they could sink free throws. They took it to Boone early in the game as Boone had 8 fouls in the first quarter, Ryle could not capitalize on this by missing too many free throws.

 

Boone pressed in the third and fourth quarter forcing a quicker pace and turnovers on Ryle's part. McFarland had a good second half and Gabbard is an impressive shooter.

 

It was a typical district battle with Boone making less mistakes and executing better in the final quarter.

 

Stauffer played a solid game, Russell played well in his return, McLeish is good at getting to basket and pull up jumper. Coleman had an off night. I thought Nichols was better than Earls in his limited time- should get more time as year goes on. Ryle is fairly deep and has good size, but lack consistent outside shooting and overall quickness. Teams that press could give them problems. Ryle's overall guard play will determine their future success as they have some good big guys that are pretty versatile and interchangeable. They really have only 1 pure point guard in Ahern and then Mcleish can handle the ball as well.

 

My prediction was pretty accurate, McFarland was the difference in 3rd and 4th quarter. Ryle had too many turnovers and due to their inability to make F.T. they lost the Free throw battle as well. Therefore a loss this time.

 

Both teams will be better at the end of the year. Ryle has tough week ahead with Oldham tomorrow and Clark cty on Friday. But it will definitely give them areas to improve on.

Whats wrong with Boone's big man Earls?

I felt Boone's point guard Gabbard was the difference in the game. However, the rebels have a bit if selfishness they need to work out to be an elite team. Both teams with improve and compete in the regional tournament.

I think Ahern is a very good guard.

He played OK and contributed, but not great. He fouled out near the end of the game. Hopefully, he can step up and be more dominant inside in the future. I believe he was the 4th leading rebounder on Boone in this game, according to the prep sports.com stats, and he was outrebounded by 2 of Boone's guards.

Congrats to Boone. They will certainly have a very nice year. Boone's key will probably be post play since they have very good guard play IMO. Good luck to Ryle this year. Their key seems to be guard play since they have some pretty good options in the post with Nichols, Stauffer and Russell.

Sure does hang around the perimeter an awful lot considering he is Boone's biggest player on the court. He should be a much bigger factor inside than what he was last night.

Ahern had a lot of trouble with Boone's press and committed many turnovers. Boone's guards were the difference in the game. Boone didn't press until the second half. They played zone the first half and got slapped with about 15 fouls. Ryle was in double bonus 1/2 of the way through the second quarter.

 

And did an extremely poor job taking advantage of this. Could have easily gone into halftime with a double-digit lead and then all the second half turnovers don't hurt quite as badly.

I think Andy developed some habits in AAU about looking to his outside shot more and he has never been a true "banger" down low considering his size. In some games you may see him assert himself as an inside presence but from what I have seen, he is generally more comfortable doing both and often times gets too much time outside the paint. Definitely something to track as Boone tries to create their style of play.

Agree. Even with good guard play, Boone will only go as far as their bigs can take them. He is big enough to get his 10 points and 4 boards a game without expending a lot of effort. With extra effort and staying inside instead of drifting to the perimeter and settling for jump shots, I think he is capable of posting 15-20 points and 7-10 boards a game. He is not a good jumper, but I would think he could use his muscle to post up, follow missed shots, etc.

Agree, but you have to admit some of the fouls called on Boone in the first half were questionable. I thought Ryle was able to get away with being more physical in the first half without having as many fouls called, while Boone was not. The fouls were more even in the second half. The first half was about 2 1/2 to 1 in favor of Ryle. Part of the reason may be that Ryle and their bigs were more effective/stronger inside in the half court set.

Andy has nice touch for a big man, but Boone needs him more as an inside player and rebounder than a three-point and jump shot shooter. He also tends to fade away from the basket when he shoots, which makes it pretty impossible to get a stick-back. He has a nice hook but tends to overuse it IMO.
