Man, I hope all this enthusiasm carries over into March. "Move up in rankings" and "watch out Holmes". Are you kidding me. Don't get me wrong but one game does not put them at the top. I hope they are very successful and win it all. I will be pulling for them. Maybe I'm wrong on this but I just think it's a little early IMO. Maybe not by the first rankings. Highlands got a first place vote :sssh:but were still 4th in the region. It's where you are in the end and I'm sure Willie and the boys will agree.

I agree somewhat. However, Highlands going to the fieldhouse and beating the defending champs is a little more special than Boone beating Ryle by 10. I think this would move them up to 2nd in the Region atleast for now. Its still very early but you gotta look at each win and who the opponent is and in this case it was the 8th ranked team in the state at their place.

I think Kowolonek might just be the most underrated player as a junior up here in nky. The Holmes and Boone juniors get hyped up a lot but I'd personnally say Kowolonek is the 4th best junior up here behind only the Johnson Brothers and Pittman.

If you would have seen them scrimmage Highlands over the summer you might have thought different. I wasnt there but a good source told me that Mason Co was re-loaded and had 3-4 major studs. I dont know what happened tonight, I am sure it was a mix of missing 2 guys, Highlands playing very good defense and causing them fits as well as outrebounding them. It could have just been a bad game by the Royals overall but in the end it is very surprising to me that they went down to the Fieldhouse and won in 2 OT's.

 

This is a huge building block for a very talented Bird team. These are all Juniors as well on the Birds roster. Atleast at this point.

 

Don't discredit your birds they eraned this W,They simply outplayed Mason on this night.Royals are young this year with 3 sophs seeing a ton of minutes,But the Birds played hard nosed Defense and totally took Mason out of there sets.Congrats to the Birds.

Maybe but remember it's preseason rankings. Mason Co had 2 starters out, this team will get alot better, they have an excellent Coach and they will get used to playing with each other.

Let's put it in perspective a little..........MC is ranked partly because of where they finished last season. They are missing players that will make them better (so is Highlands), how much better? Guess the rest of the season will say. Regarding the game, HHS outplayed them (last night) and can take a win from the fieldhouse to build their season on. Does it make them better than Ryle, Holmes, whoever.....no. What can be taken from this is that HHS showed toughness down the stretch to win a tight game in a hostile environment....stuff that marks a good team. They showed that the talent they put on the floor is good enough to win and hope that the big guys joining in will allow them to compete with teams with better size. Beyond that, they still have to win ballgames, but this is going to be a formidable ninth region team capable of beating anyone on a given night. Can't agree with a first place vote in the local polls but they are clearly a top five team and may surprise some on how competetive they will be against their schedule.

Well said but I still say not Boone or Ryle goes into the fieldhouse and does the same. Atleast not at this point in the season. The top 5 in the 9th are all pretty equal though.

ER, Maybe he wouldn't be so underrated if you would quit touting those Holmes studs every step ! LOL Actually, Kowolonek has developed nicely and is actually a very young Jr. .....the best is yet to come. It is nice to see someone break into the Holmes/Boone all-star lineup though !

It's hard not to tout the Holmes players after they went to the state title game last year.

 

Anyhoo, it was a rough game to watch as a Mason Co fan, but Highlands was the better team at the end of the day. The Royals are ranked in state because of what they did last year. This team will have to and will get its chance to prove itself of a state ranking, starting with the Cov Cath game on Friday.

Mason County is missing two senior starters that will bring scoring and leadership to the team. One of the missing players is their second best player too. They will be much better when they come back.
