Anyone got any info on the Elliott game?

I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of that this season. Not that Russ doesn't have capable running mates; far from it, but the Royals will be "his team" this time around.

 

I plan on making the trip over to Park Hills to see MC take on Covcath next Fri. Will you be making the trip up here?

Elliott County looked very strong in beating Madisonville 90-54. Ferguson, the Faulkners, and Timmy Knipp were all very effective. Don't have any stats. Hood is the real deal, but he has absolutley no help at all. Scott County looked very beatable in their game. Logan, West Virginia, was not that strong, but Scott County shot the ball poorly, with the exception of Euton, who shot well in the 1st half, but did little in the second.

Elliott Co. looked very good tonight. They are all over the court on both ends of the floor Ferguson hit some Deep 3's and the Twins played there game, T. Knipp looked better then I seen him last year. Hood is a Very good player and will help UK he just doesnt have any help. He will win Mr. Basketball hands down The gap between Him and the rest of the top players is Big.

A little summary from my view point:

Elliott looked much better than Scott Co. did. Guyn was out of control throughout the game. Phares(sp?) didnt play as I expect he is there 2nd best player behind Jackson. Had S.C wanted to press Logan then this game wouldnt have been close. I hope that Phares is a leader because if not then that team will have major problems this season. Hood has 0 help and will get shut down some this year basically because teams will double team him and not worry about the rest. I am stoked about he being at UK, although he didnt seemed to be as athletic as advertised he has a nice shot and can shoot free throws.

He can play but MNH requires him to be everything from a PG to the post man. The other kids seemed afraid to handle the ball or shoot until he was out of the game. Elliott should clearly dominate in the 16th. The only issue may be depth, but Mays seemed to sub alot more last night, so I guess he is working on it.

Jackson was the most impressive athlete on the court. He is a tremendous talent and looks like a college player already. Euton reminds me of Hansbourgh for North Carolina. Kid works hard, hustles all the time, and lays it all on the line and gets the most of his talent. Guyn must have shot (what seem like) 30 times and some of them very ill advised. If I could coach for a day he would sit beside me and we would talk.

 

One other note: Elliott's lack of depth and bench which was a real weakness is way ahead of schedule. Morgan, Ison, Flannery, and Nickels are providing some surprising good quality minutes and steady play. If they continue to improve it may not be a weakness at all come March.

You have to give Hood and his Dad props for not sending him to a school(ala Scott County, Catholic,etc.) for attention. Madisonville, with a former girls coach, and all role players doesn't exactly scream attention. The kid will be bruised and battered by seasons end from double and triple teams and from opposing coaches that will be using all the fouls they can to get the attention that will come from beating a Jon Hood- team. Still in a world of grade school,middle school and high school transfers, very refreshing to see. Would live to see a Madisonville-Elliott County final in the State Tournament and Scott County go out in the district.

I wonder what the story would be if Hood's dad lost the job he'd had for 20 years?

 

Hats off to the Hood family. I just read a little about them and Jon's younger brother. What a truly great family and fine young man. UK landed a dandy.

 

It is ridiculous for people to try to suggest that one is better than another for truly superficial reasons. The fact that these kids have worked hard, toughed out grueling conditioning and drills when a lot of their buddies were hanging out at the mall, skateboarding and playing X-Box says a lot about them and their parents in a culture that demands immediate gratification.

Are you saying that Euton and Jackson and the Johnson families did not make the best decision for their families? And when I say best decisions that can include the boys basketball future as well. Its a family decision that each family makes thats best for them.

It it was not a good move for the family it would not have happened. Thats the way I see it.
