I thought both teams schedules looked fairly weak. P'burg lost big to maybe the best team in 1A. Corbin somewhat dominated the 2nd or 3rd best team in 1A and dominated the #4 or 5 team in 4A, Knox Central. The Corbin/Middlesboro score is somewhat closer than the actual game played out. Our D was pretty tough. And Corbin/Middlesboro (IMO) is a top 5 rivalry in the state.

 

They did look bad against Beechwood, but Beechwood could whip most 4A or 5A schools, they do not need to be a 1A school!

Not sure if a Prestonsburg win could be considered an upset. I see the game as a "pick 'em". If you go by rankings I guess a Prestonsburg win would be considered an upset. Some consider a Corbin win an upset........

 

Very little doubt Corbin should be considered the favorite, as a traditionally strong undefeated team, playing at home, should be.

There were three big reasons. 1) Beechwood is very good, 2) the Blackcats did a poor job of holding onto the football (TO's and dropped passes), and 3) Prestonsburg came in with a pass-first game plan (NOT P-burg's preferred playing style).

 

 

P'burg had a couple close games late in the season that they should have won by a bigger margin, makes me wonder if they may have already peaked.

 

LOL... Some in Prestonsburg were starting to think the same. But the Middlesboro game showed maybe they're catching a 2nd wind. Prestonsburg's win was by more than the score indicates - the only time Middlesboro made the red zone was on their lone scoring drive in the 4th qtr..

 

 

This game will be a heart-breaker either way....

I'll give you this...Prestonsburg has a well-balanced offensive attack. The Blackcats are very competent running inside and outside, and passing deep and underneath.

I thought they had home field thoughout the playoffs! One of my friends told me about the even/odd system and he thought this game was going to be at P-Burg. You guys are lucky, P-Burg is a tough place to play!

These 2 teams are very similiar. Both teams running backs are VERY good, strong power runners. The difference is going to be in the air, Prestonsburg can pass and will. Corbin has not passed much and I have seen them in 2 games. Corbin's defense does not guard real good against the pass either. I thought the game was going to be played at P-Burg but it is not and this will also play a factor in the game. I am still sticking to my prediction and saying Prestonsburg by 7, but it could go either way, Prestonsburg's strength of schedule has to be a lot better than Corbin's and this is the reason I am going with P-Burg, they have played a lot of good teams this year, Corbin's schedule is pretty weak compared to that of Prestonsburg. Another factor, look at both teams compared to Middlesboro. Prestonsburg put 20 points on a very good Middlesboro defense, Corbin 14 points. Good luck to both teams because the roads keeps getting tougher each week and I hope one of these 2 teams make it to Louisville.

 

I was actually relieved we didn't play Middlesboro again, but that's just me........

Sometimes there is something of interest in there.

It's understandable how some are confusing Prestonsburg for a District 8 team. After all, they used to be just that.

 

When Belfry, Sheldon Clark, and Breathitt Co. were 2A sized, Prestonsburg was in District 8 with the Pirates and Cardinals. The Bobcats were in District 7. That was all in the timeframe Corbin was stuck in the western semi-state of 2A.

 

That's how two mountain teams (Corbin and Breathitt Co.) made the Title game back in '02.

Why do they play bad sometimes like against Perry Central which is a very avg. team.

I think it was dumb luck they were even scheduled. Last year, Prestonsburg needed to fill a spot on the schedule late in the season and it just so happened the Commodores needed to do the same. And...the drive to Hazard is only an hour away.

 

I'll tell you something. PCC's coach is really making a big difference in that program. If his players continue buying into what he says, don't look for them to be "very average" much longer.

 

Last season, Prestonsburg was caught looking past what the players thought would be an easy win. P-burg just blew it while PCC came with it.

 

This year, the game was played in a quagmire. PCC's QB (forgot the name) was an absolute nightmare to catch when he broke into open field with the ball. He was small enough (couldn't have been bigger than 5'7" and 150 lbs) to run at speed and change direction without slipping. He was the only one on the field that could do so. He singlehandedly made our defense look terrible.

I don't think Corbin can be anointed the favorite. Prestonsburg is balanced, battle tested and very experienced team. It will take a monumental effort for Corbin to take this game. We are up to the challenge, but from the looks of this poll, I have a gut feeling many don't know just how good Prestonsburg is!

Most discount Prestonsburg for the thrashing Beechwood gave them. And the perception of the Blackcats was not helped by the poor performances at the end of the season against Shelby Valley and Perry Central.

 

Whether you believe it or not, Corbin is undoubtedly the favorite in this game. And they should be. The Redhounds have been incredibly consistant this year.

 

Frankly, I'm surprised the poll is as close as it is...
