Yeah, with six classes, three teams per district would be more than enough. There are some occasional giant killer 4's, but the 0-fer teams really bother me also.

Dislike it. Too many teams qualify. Too much traveling in the first round.

I'm with Rebel an NKU20, take less teams into the playoffs and make it four total games instead of five. I hate having 6 classes to begin with, something needs to be done because having 0-fers in the playoffs is totally insane. My question is, is that how can KY have a 6 class system when much bigger states like OH only have a 4 class system. My point is that there are more high schools in Cleveland and Cincy combined than there are in all of KY! Theres something wrong there in a big way!

As a fan that hasn't had to travel very far in the first couple of rounds, I don’t have any major complaints about the current system. I wonder out of the people who dislike the current system, how many are associated with the 4th place teams that have to travel a long distance only to be blown out and how many are fans of 1st and 2nd place seed teams? How do the Administrations, coaches, players, and fans of the 4th place teams feel about the current system?

Although Ohio and Kentucky both have 192 team playoffs, 192 teams in Kentucky represents about 87% of the teams, where in Ohio 192 teams represents only 26% of the teams. That means a lot of teams in Ohio with 7-3, 8-2, and even 9-1 records don’t make the playoffs. In Kentucky that would be unheard of. In my mind I would rather a 0-10 get that extra game then a 9-1 team be excluded based on a mathematical formula.

That said, I think the KHSAA would put everyone in the playoffs if they could...but 32 is kind of a "magic" number in the sense that it makes a nice, even bracket without byes, etc.

 

I have no problem with the lopsided first round scores...for a lot of reasons. One, I like the opportunities the 1-4 matchups offer for late-blooming teams...two, having four teams in the playoffs from each district maintains interest over the regular season, even if a team loses its first two district games...and three, for many 1 seeds, that first round game will be the only playoff game the 2nd and 3rd string players get to play in.

 

Sure, there aren't many 4 seeds that are victorious in round one (I think there were two this year)...but some win every year...

 

In Oldham County's 58-13 win over Waggener last week, pretty much every able-bodied player on the Colonels' roster saw significant time. That's a good thing...

 

Now that we've eliminated the issue of playing your own district's teams in the first two rounds, I really like the setup.

Is the setup for next season the same as this year or will it be somewhat different as in will you play a different district than the one played in the previous year?

Someone needs to study a 5 class scenario. Leave 6A alone. Compress the other 5 classes into 4. Keep the playoff format the same. My guess is that would minimize the 0-10 and 1-9 teams getting into the playoffs but give deep in quality districts the playoff slots their teams deserve.

 

We had the same problem with 4 classes. Cross districts weren't even in numbers and some losing teams, even ofer teams, made it as a 4 seed while teams with winning records might not qualify due to being in an 8 team district.

I like playing other districts but the 4 teams making the playoffs has got to go. There are too many teams that have 0-10 records that are in. I think 3 teams make it and get back to the regular season meaning something.

I agree, I am not saying it's good or bad. I am simply saying this isn't something that is new to KY's playoff system, and will probably always be an issue. Sure beats the BCS though.

My question is why has the playoff system changed over time and even the classifications? My guess is that to many people complained about the current system whatever it was at the time. I just think people like to complain in general! It seems to be an innate quality that us humans have. It has been my experience that you should be carefull of what you want changed because what you get in its place may be much worse! Just a thought!
