November 10, 200817 yr From the book - "Everything Must Change" "the poor you will have with you always" is often used to aruge against the elimination of poverty . . . 'Quoting Jesus' words from matthew 26:11 to defend a complacency toward the poor becomes manifeswtly ridiculous when one looks at the passage of the Old Testament jesus is himslef quoting: Deuteronomy 15. After saying, "There will always be poor eople in the land," the text says, "Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward . . .the poor and needy in your land: (v 11). And eiarlier in the chapter (v.4), we read, "However, there should be no poor among you." because the land can produce an abundance for all if that abundance is fairly distributed through a just legal system - or to use our term in this bookd a just equity system.' "It's risky business to superficially quote Jesus!" Isn't the bolded shocking. Surely God is a capitalist, but this suggests otherwise. hmmmm It certainly would lead people to believe that way wouldn't it.
November 10, 200817 yr I would certainly be willing to read those books, but please don't discount Payne's book as being biased in either direction. It is simply a "framework for understanding poverty." It doesn't give any recommendations, such as entitlement programs/welfare, etc, it simply gives a look at patterns and behaviors. It truly is enlightening. I'd be glad to trade a copy of it with a copy of a book that you recommend, if you are interested. Most of my political books are on my Amazon Kindle but thanks for the offer. I had a couple of Dr. Sowell's books but passed them on to my kids in Morehead. The Rogan book is on my Kindle and I have not purchased the Thomas book yet.
November 10, 200817 yr Our nation's poor are quite prosperous. Check out the following story: "The following are facts about persons defined as “poor” by the Census Bureau, taken from a variety of government reports:" http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MjE3NTA4Yjc0NjQxMDA4ZjhlZjczMWM0YWNlM2JhOTg= I found these points particularly interesting. 80 percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning. The typical poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.) Nearly three quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars. 97 percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions. 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Wow, at 1st I thought with Obama's presidency I would be classified as rich, but after seeing this, I think I'm poor.
November 10, 200817 yr This is the only country in the world where the poorest people are usually the fattest. Nobody in this country goes without the basics of food, clothing and shelter other than possibly the mentally ill or stubbornly proud. No economy in the world is more favorable to a hard-worker getting ahead and succeeding that the one in this country. Poverty today is relative, I guess, but I am not sure to what it is relative. The poor today are middle class by standards from just a few years ago.

I have one book suggested to me by acemona to read over Thanksgiving, but will need a few more.
November 10, 200817 yr Got an itch? Had an itch... I typed out a nice big post, submitted it, and then decided a minute or so later I'd prefer to keep that can of worms sealed and shut. Of course, I had to wait and check for a few minutes just to make sure somebody hadn't quoted it and started a reply before I got it edited. Pretty sure I'm in the clear now. Shew. :scared:

November 10, 200817 yr I read it and thought it was great. You should have left it. Thanks. I didn't second guess anything I typed. Pretty confident it was dead on, but... ...after a little consideration, I just didn't think it be worthwhile to go down that road. If you've ever taken that path, you know...if not, you'll probably learn. BTW, I'm really glad you didn't quote it and reply to it.

I have one book suggested to me by acemona to read over Thanksgiving, but will need a few more.If you want to leave that offer open, I may want to exchange a few books with you later, TBG. I have quite a backlog of unread books on my Kindle because my recent reading has consisted almost exclusively of political blogs and daily newspapers. I resumed reading Rogan's Rough Edges this morning. If the rest of the book is as good as the first few chapters, then I may buy the print copy and send it to you. Again, thanks for the offer of the Payne's book. My wife's background is in teaching and I am sure that she would also enjoy reading it. I will PM you when I have caught up on my reading backlog.
