You know it isn't always about money, but peace of mind and time. As in the Movie Field of Dreams

Mann: Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack.

A lot of people have money, but what they don't have is peace and time! I wish more with money would also give their time in helping the poor or handicapped. Time to a lot of people with money, is more important than money, it's easy to give up the money but impossible to give up their time!

Wow, money, money money!!! After I pay a large amount of taxes, I have donated my time, clothing, toys, and quite a few items I have owned to local charity. Not always about cash!!

The government may have an important role to play in many matters, but that can never satisfy Jesus’ call for those who would follow him to care for those in need. Christians are called to “tax” themselves—giving their time, prayers, bodies and souls in friendships and Christian fellowship with those less fortunate.

If only people would realize that time is probably the most valuable of all resources one can give to a charitable cause.....Money is definitely needed, but volunteers to help the cause is what's needed to make the money go further.

Since the gist of this thread seemed to be the Biblical basis for high taxation my comment was limited to money.

But since time was brought up, do you favor government mandated community service? Obama does.

Mandated? No.

Mandated? No.

Yes. I think a year of public service or military service is an excellent idea.

I don't. How much money would be spent on that kind of program. Take every 18 year old kid in the U.S., house them, feed them and train them, and start from scratch every year?? Come on.

I didn't say I knew how to fund it, I said I thought it was a good idea. How do the Swiss do it??

Yes I think it would be a great idea for everyone, not just for some, but in return a reduction in college cost or some other form of reduction of educational cost is in order!

Who cares? I'm not in Switzerland.

You are right, there is nohing we can learn from those outside of these borders.

acemona, can you please tell me what bible you got your origional verse from, "distributing through a just legal system"?

Even 43 yr olds who have recently had a career-ending knee injury and subsequent surgery?:cry: Actually, as an accountant, I suppose I could count bomb and missile inventories for a year.

I meant for those entering their early 20s, my apologies. I simply think the peace corp or Americorp are both ideas that could be expanded.

I knew what you meant just giving you a hard time. :D Actually, a year in the military could be a life-changing event for many and would be a great means of teaching responsibilty and respect to those with troubled upbringings.

I'm glad you agree.

What version of the bible did you find this in. I reviewed the KJV, the NIV and the New American Standard versions and did not find anything about "distributing through a just legal system". Also this commandment was for Israelites to care for Israelites. It commands Hebrews to cancel the debt from another Hebrew during the seventh year. But debt from non Israelites are allowed to continue.

Leviticus also talks about the poor. It tells property owners to leave the edges of their harvest to the poor. This indicates two things. First the poor must go and work to receive the food, and that they aren't to receive the best. This is a commandment to individuals, not a government.

"It's risky business to superficially quote Jesus!"

Maybe the author didn't heed his own advice?
