Class 5A Region 3 (Unofficial) Playoff Pairings

Featured Replies

None of this is official yet; but based on my own calculations, I'm prepared to call the race in the 3-way tied 6th District. Tonight's victory of Johnson Central over Ashland created a tie for 2nd place among Ashland, Woodford County and Bryan Station. But the current and possible points for each of the teams appear to have rendered the results inevitable.

If I have the numbers correct, Woodford County can no longer pass Ashland for the 2nd place spot. Similarly, Bryan Station can no longer hope to pass Woodford for 3rd place. Here's how the tie-breaker race stands after tonight's games. Current points are totaled under each team with maximum possible points in parentheses.

------------------------------------------------------

Ashland

Pikeville – 5 (5)

Russell – 6 (6)

Montgomery County – 3 (4)

Boyd County – 5 (6)

Greenup County – 3 (4)

19 (21)

Woodford County

Bardstown – 3 (4)

Montgomery County - 3 (4)

Franklin County – 5 (5)

West Jessamine – 3 (4)

Meade County – 4 (4)

14 (17)

Bryan Station

Paul Dunbar – 1 (1)

Western – 1 (3)*

Montgomery County - 3 (4)

Tates Creek – 2 (3)

Fleming County – 1 (1)

7 (11)

*No results available yet for Western.

------------------------------------------------------

Based on the above, here is how I believe the Region 3 bracket will look:

Highlands

Bryan Station

Ashland

Dixie Heights

Johnson Central

Holmes

Covington Catholic

Woodford County

I see it 2-2. Highlands and CovCath moving on to the 2nd round.

A win against Whitley this week and Meade Co. next week could have done alot for the Yellowjackets. But looking at your calculations, it is almost certain that Ashland will host a playoff game as the #2 seed.

Yes, if Woodford would have defeated Whitley County, they would have been tied with Ashland, and in position to possibly overtake them for the number two spot.

I don't think Bryan Station can do much with Highlands, but they are a different type of team than Highlands has had to prepare for in the first round of previous years.

Toughest first round opponent for the Birds since the '91 loss to Montgomery County?

Stupid tie-breaker system...Station is better than Woodford and Ashland, IMO. But now they must win in Fort Thomas to advance....

With those brackets, Holmes is the only team who I really see not winning in the first round.

Highlands should take care of business as should CCH and Dixie should win a close one against Ashland. Not sure Ashland has the offense to keep up with Dixie or the defense to stop them.

From there I like Highlands over Dixie and CCH over Johnson Central to force a Birds-Colonels region final. (With the team from Fort Thomas winning of course)

HHS all the way
