October 29, 200817 yr Here's an interesting topic that no one has really brought up yet. Is it America's job to protect Israeli even if it means no peace in the Middle East?
October 29, 200817 yr Israel has always been one of our strongest allies. Are you suggesting that the US should just let them be destroyed?
October 29, 200817 yr If there is a power capable of destroying Israel we would be of little to no help to them. Suffice to say that they should be treated as a respected ally, but the Unites States should not jump through hoops of fire on the behalf of Israel.
October 29, 200817 yr Isn't Israel's army one of the most feared in the world? "Ask not what we can do for Israel, but what Israel can do for us".
October 29, 200817 yr Author Israel has always been one of our strongest allies. Are you suggesting that the US should just let them be destroyed? No, but I'm pretty sure they can protect themselves.
October 30, 200817 yr The Israli army is THE MOST efficient army in the world. From my understanding every citizen, man or woman, has to serve. In a fair fight they would probably even defeat the US, problem is they are small and the fight with their most likely enemy Iran wouldn't be fair....If they are attacked, we must intervene IMO.

Are you kidding? Israel would roll over any army in the region in a matter of days. Are we, as a predominantly Christian nation, obliged by the Bible to protect Israel?
October 30, 200817 yr What we should have done decades ago was allow Israel to freely defend itself and secure its borders without constant US meddling in its internal affairs. Had that been done, the Middle East would be a much more peaceful place today. Instead, American politicians have imposed an artificial stalemate in the region.

Can't say that I completely disagree.
October 30, 200817 yr The Give War A Chance argument. Can't say that I completely disagree.Wars normally have winners and losers. Until that happens, reconciliation does not begin. Our constant push on Israel to surrender land in exchange for peace that has never followed has made the situation worse.

You raise some good points in the post Hoot. However should it be noted that there has been NO open war from an Arab coalition since the '73 conflict? Yes, they are under constant threat of terrorist attacks from enemies but the Arab nations have not united to mount an actual war whose aim was to retake Jerusalem and the territory in 35 years. A lot of that no doubt has to do with their fear of open conflict with Israel but also the diplomacy of the US. In particular I am thinking of Egypt. They were the main instigators of both the '67 and '73 wars but have backed away from their old rhetoric and have been at least a peacable neighbor due to diplomacy the US was involved in.

As with a lot of things we do in America with the Israel/Palestine battle, we have bitten off more than we can chew.

The neighbors who invaded Israel were defeated and I have no problem with Israel negotiating terms of peace with governments in the area. My problem is the ongoing series of negotiations and broken agreements between the nation of Israel and terrorist organizations.
October 30, 200817 yr I think we are on the brink of a very serious matter between Israel and Iran. In fact, I think the Israelies are waiting to see what happens with the US Presidential election in order to determine their course of action in regards to Iran. I don't think they will sit by and wait for Iran to wipe them out.
