Why don't St.X and Trinity dominate in baseball like they do in football

Featured Replies

I was wondering why is it that these two schools dominate in football but when it comes to baseball it is a different story.

My opinion is that in football they have a bigger selection of people to find the ones who are fast or strong. In baseball it is more about the intangibles and thus harder to find. You can teach fast/athletic guys to catch a football and run a post route. But trying to teach them to hit a 80 mph fastball is a lot harder.

I don't know the answer to this question. I can remember both of these teams being VERY good in the late 80's-early 90's however!

By the way, welcome to the site scoutschoice!

I'll take shot at this one from the perspective of an X grad and parent of an X footballer and baseballer. Two reasons, (1) the differences in the two sports and (2) talent disbursement.

First, X is not dominant in baseball but they are almost always very competitive. Same with T. Baseball, though a team game, is won and lost by individual skill. Pitcher versus batter. No teammate can help the pitcher throw strikes, nor can a teammate help you hit the ball. Individual performances from one or two players on the mound or getting clutch hits usually decides the outcome of a close game. Plus baseball is just a "funny game". You can have nine guys that hit the ball sharply every time up but if if the baseball "gods" are frowning and you hit it right at people you don't have much to show for it on the scoreboard. Football is different in that you have 11 guys playing together on every snap. One stud back usually won't beat X and T. You still need a line and some other weapons to put points on the board against X and T.

Finally, I'll say the feeder system that provides the talent plays a large part The CSAA(catholic grade school) football feeder system has served X and T very well over the years. The coaching and competition is very good. The same can't be said for CSAA baseball--other than the YMCA it is the least competitve form of youth baseball. Travel ball, Little League and Cal Ripken are much more competitive. Those programs don't directly feed into X and T. PRP, Male, Ballard, Eastern, and Manual all have top notch baseball programs with excellent coaches that offer an attractive "free" alternative to X and T. In football, X and T are like the old Porsche slogan--"There is no substitute".

Well as a newcomer here I have asked around and people tell me that even in football that St X and Trinity don't have the best athletes. They say other schools here in Louisville have better talent so what is the difference maker.

Scout, it is true that on any given Friday X and T's opponent may have as many or more D1 prospects. The difference IMO is that X and T will have 30 or 40 football crazy, smart, better than average athletes in every class. This translates into no weak spots and depth. Sounds like a cliche, but superior coaching, conditioning and player committment also plays a huge role. Baseball is all hand-eye, some kids just will never be able to hit a curve ball no matter how many cage swings they take.

Baseball is a completly different game. All you need is one good pitcher to shut down a whole line-up. My guess is also that the majority of their best athletes stick to football and basketball.

I'm gonna guess that it has something to do with spring football practice. There is probably enough competition on the football field for positions at powerhouse schools like these that no one wants to take a chance on not getting a chance. I think this is the case in certain high schools in NKY, but I'm not sure.

Hey Park and not to turn your words around but are you telling me that baseball at these two schools don't have baseball crazy, smart,I'll give you the better than average athletes because that is hard to find on the baseball field, players. Do you really think that baseball is just a hand-eye coordination sport that doesn't need the above mentioned and what you said about as for as it sounds like a cliche but superior coaching, conditioning, and player committment.

Scout, you make good points. Baseball is not just hand-eye, speed and power certainly make a difference. Overall though, it is a skills game. X and T simply have more competiton from the publics to attract those skilled players. In football, we tend to attract some of the better non-catholic grade school kids. The same is not true in baseball. X and T both have committed players and excellent coaches. But baseball is not a game where you can beat a team by having 60 or 70 kids that can throw 75 mph and hit .275.

So Park, we are knew in the area and I have a son who will be in high school next year. I want a good baseball program for him. Both Trinity and X came up as far as schools to look at but I've done a little homework and found out they are stronger in football than baseball. Can you help me out here?

I seen both play last year and they are good and should be better this year. Trinty had a itting coach that alot of the kids didn't like and I am sure that he is gone now. So they should do better in that area.

As for X Jefferson is a good coach and would have mafe it to the state last year but the baseball gods work in CA way. If is was not for the gas and time there would be more kids from are area going there to play baseball.

Scout, my son played baseball in grade school at Fern Creek Babe Ruth, and then later @ J-Town Little League, and played at St. Gabriel from 3rd grade on. He also played football at St. Gabriel. He was a better than average baseball player, but his heart was in football. He started the try out process at Trinity and went through the cuts pretty deep. But in the end, he knew that he didn't have the time to commit to both, and chose football. I think a lot of kids make that choice, at least several that I know that played with my son. I don't think there's a lack of talent at Trinity or X, nor do I think that there's a lack of coaching in any way. I do think that a huge number of kids play for the Little League teams and Babe Ruth teams in Louisville, and those programs are VERY good. Many of those kids go on to play at Male, Ballard, PRP, etc. But, that's not a knock against the programs at Trinity & X by them. But I'd say 2/3 of the kids in BR & LL are from public schools, and most aren't going to go on to X or T anyway. I also agree with one poster's comments that CSAA leage in Louisville isn't on par with the LL & BR leagues. Not that they don't try, and have committment, but that the traditional LL & BR are very attractive and for a baseall player, the right path.

I hope that gives you a "former" parent's perspective. I also say that if you're looking at T & X, you could consider that state success is not necessarily the only things to consider. 2 players in the playoffs this year were from X & T. Tyler Kuhn played for Trinity, and won numerous honors at WVU, and was drafted pretty high. There's more than just the record of the school to consider, it's what these teams can do to prepare these young men for the next level they'll be playing at.

Baseball: No one team has won the state title for more than consecutive three seasons, ever! The KHSAA starting handing out this trophy in 1940. Only two teams have three-peated. PRP 94-96 and Ashland-Blazer 66-68.

In this case, no one school has ever dominated baseball.

Baseball is much different. Face one hot pitcher and you are done. Face a hot team, regardless of size of school, and you are done. One critical error and you are done. Do you think Christian Academy of Louisville could defeat Trinity or St. X in football? Let alone in consecutive games? Only Clark County (George Rogers Clark if you prefer) has ever pulled off that feat in football.

Basketball, same theory applies: One tall player may dominate a game. One super Division 1 prospect can lead his team to a state title. Football takes quite a bit more from 11 guys per play at a time.
