Unfortunately, they can't split the school now, from what I know the kids get along and they don't care after a few weeks at the high school. It seems to be the parents on both sides of the county. If they could have set up one middle school instead of 2, this could have saved a lot of headaches.

 

I believe alot of it would be stopped if the two middle schools did not play against each other in sports but actually combined as one team as they do in High School. The two Middle schools Mckell, and Wurtland, have so much pressure on each other to beat the opposite team. If they could learn about each player earlier and let the kids bond together as a team I believe it would make a difference. JMO.

This was done in Portsmouth - Grant and McKinley was combined long before their new school was built and they played as the Portsmouth Middle School Trojans - by the time the new building was built the students didn't know anything about the Generals and the Spartans.

Like I said on the Ashland/GC prediction thread.....there are too many chiefs and not enough indians. It is a power struggle between parents at BOTH ends. South Shore gets the brunt of it because for a long time, it was percieved that all starters in the sports programs were from McKell. Fact was, at the time, McKell had the only 7-8th grade football team and a very successful pee-wee team. So, naturally, the football players were more ready for high school than kids from other areas of the county. McKell typically had the best of the 11 elementary basketball teams (not every year). Baseball was the only sport that has always been "equal" and there has never been too many issues on this point throughout the years. So, is there an answer....yes. Will it ever work?........so far NO. Until then, we will all discuss the same topic over and over and over. Sad isn't it?

I think that the Wurtland folks don't have to put up with what they perceive as politics within the county (and some haven't obviously) because it's not too far down the road, closer in most cases, to simply go to Raceland who is also still within the county. I was questioned recently as to why don't the disgruntled folks on the north end of the county do the same thing? My answer: Where are they gonna go?,,,,,,Lewis Co.?:confused:

Good point, doc. Besides, they're still fighting with Tollesboro about consolidation issues.

Added to the list Josh Reed, Laiken Diller, Justin Ratliff going to Raceland all was in Mckell Middle school. Diller and Reed still reside in South Shore area.

The Diller girl transferred when her father got a job with coaching boys basketball and softball. I don't think it is fair to include her in this discussion. As far as Justin and the Reed boy, both kids transferred before high school.

Still doesn't change the fact that they are students that could easily attend Greenup, one of their buses passes by their homes. Can't blame them whatsoever. I lived directly across the street from GCHS and never attended there a single day.

This goes back to the Parent issue. If a parent would put their foot down and keep the CHILD where he/she should be we wouldn't have this discussion. Kids shouldn't have the power to switch. I know I didn't have a say so when I was a teenager and my kids don't have a say now. That is up to parents.

Yes you are right the parents should not let the kids transfer on the drop of a hat. Dosen't the school have a say so about all of the transfers I thought before you could switch to a different school you had to move to that area?:confused:

I believe parents are making decisions about transferring not necessarily the kids in some cases.

I was discussing this issue with a patient who happens to be a teacher at GC that grew up away from here. He said 2 interesting points. 1.) The kids need a special coach/staff that basically give them the psychology or belief in themselves that they are winners and capable of winning. 2.) They are possibly playing while the best athletes are not.

 

Forget transfers for a moment. How do you find that kind of coach in high school (any sport) and how do you get the good kids to participate instead of sitting in the stands or at home?
