This is why IMO Harlan County is at an almost disadvantage every game in the eyes of fans, spectators, opponents etc.

 

If they win they were supposed to win because they are 5A playing 3A. So they never get any respect when they do win.

 

If they lose, they were supposed to beat the other team because they are a 5A playing a 3A. So they will always catch heck when they lose.

 

It is a CATCH 22.

 

The Blackbears will be fine. They moved on to Powell County the second the game was over.

This is where the 3A/5A thing needs to be put to rest. Like Bear_Paw said, Breathitt would be competing at the same level in 5A. Look at it like this, Harlan County went to Letcher, and should have won the game. Letcher is the best team in that district. What does that say about the difference in 3A and 5A? I'm glad we aren't in 4A...

They'll be fine...it takes a time to get all 8 cylinders firing when you merge three schools into one and bring in a new football coach.

 

Larkey had one summer to analyze his players and figure out who would fit best where. That's not easy...especially when you've got three schools worth of players coming together to form one team. These kids are probably learning a new offense and defense...some of them are probably playing new positions and new roles...some may be playing a smaller role than they're accustomed to. It sounds great on paper, but it doesn't happen at the snap of a finger.

 

The 5A/3A argument doesn't carry much weight in this instance. Any advantage HC might have from size is more than negated by the growing pains a first year program faces, IMO. The argument might be valid if they stayed in 3A for 10 years.

 

I fully expect this football program to one of the best in the mountains on a consistent basis once everyone gets comfortable with the merger. I'm not an expert on how long that takes, but I'd imagine a worst case scenario would put them on a pretty high level of play by year 3.

 

I wouldn't get too upset of this loss if I were HC. There's still time to improve and get ready to make some noise in the playoffs.

That sums it up very well.

I doubt Harlan County will play anyone better than Breathitt in its 5A district. Breathitt has been a much more consistent winner than any of those teams.

I love this post 5wide; you said almost everything I have wanted to say to our critics about playing in the 3A class and about the new program being put together. The Bears are still getting used to each other and Coach Larkey's style of play.

 

Having said that, I have been almost sick since Friday, trying to get over that mess we witnessed Friday night. There were a lot of factors that went into this game and why we had such a poor showing IMO. We played a VERY talented team in Breathitt who have been together for years and are used to playing in big games with big expectations and playoff implications. It was the first home game for the Bears in front of a HUGE crowd, all that tremendous hype, excitement and expectation put on the boys, first game in the rain for a bunch of boys who probably aren't even really used to playing with each other in dry conditions yet, not having our starting QB who is a great passer and could have opened up our running game and loosened up the Breathitt defense, just to name a few.

 

I am still as proud as ever of our boys and what they have accomplished so far in their first year together. It is now time to learn from this and move on. I look for great things in the years to come and cannot wait to see the Bears in action against Powell Co. GO BEARS...WE STILL LOVE YOU AND BELIEVE IN YOU!!! :thumb:

^I'd say not having your starting QB would be the biggest problem. I was very surprised by the result...and if they meet again, I'd be just as surprised to see it happen again.

Hey Bears, what is the latest on the Frosh,JV games nothing has been in the HDE on the last two games. Corbin and LCC were the games, not sure if they were freshman or JV. Mama B, I know if anyone has the info it would be you.

THe JV was beaten by LCC by two TD's on Monday. (I think that was the score) and the Fresh play tomorrow against the hounds at home. I hear Taylor may have finally found his MOJO again!

Freshmen team is 3-1. All of those have either been covered or called in.

 

The JV had Corbin last week and Letcher Central this week (they play on Mondays). I heard Corbin won 14-8 last week.
