Annual KHSAA meeting-no public/private debate

Your statement makes no sense flatrock. First you state they don't have a choice but then you state yes they choose.

For the record everyone, the Boone County school system can accept anyone they want to accept but they choose not to accept students from outside of their district lines.

BTW Guru they do allow this to happen, if you work for them they allow it, but won't allow it for the average joe taxpayer!

Just FYI, a friend of our family lives in Shelby County and their kid goes to Manual. He's a bazillionaire too, so I don't know how he slipped from the clutches of those greedy catholic schools! :p

What I am trying to say is that, yes they choose not to allow out of district students. But the reason they do not is based on overcrowding issues brought about by state funding issues. So in essence they are "forced" to not allow them because they have no where to put them.

State funding issues have absolutely nothing to do with the "overcrowding " in the Boone schools. They simply have experienced unplanned for growth beyond their capacity to provide space. The funding is based on a mix of ADA, local monies and state and federal monies. Are we now going to hear how poor Boone County Schools cannot compete because they lack money and are overcrowded? I dare say Dayton or Ludlow would gladly accept those "challenges."

I must interject here. I'm not surprised at all that this thread was started. I'm convinced that even though it seems cooler heads are prevailing at the KHSAA, and the membership has been somewhat mollified with the reclassification of football, and private schools are not dominating girls basketball, they're content----for now. But I don't think the average "fan" is mollified.

And state funding does not keep pace with this growth.

Do they have to pay a tuition?

Do they have to pay a tuition?

Whether the answer is yes or no and the amount of tuition would be decided by the Board of Education.

And state funding does not keep pace with this growth.

A more incorect statement could not possibly be made. Stats funding, while a complex mixture of state, federal and local monies, is primarily based on ADA (Average Daily Attendance). therefore, the more students that attend daily, the more funding. While that is over-simplified, that is the fundamental base. No, money is definitely NOT the issue with Boone County schools.

Where you have to be careful with public school funding is what funding are they talking about.

My understanding ADA money cannot be used for building projects so, while your ADA money could be funding appropriately, the funding to build schools to have enough classrooms for the student explosion could be lagging.

Don't mean to say that is what they meant but just pointing out that there are different pots of money for schools and if you missing something, you may have a lot of money in several pots but not the correct pot. That is state rules and nothing Boone Co could do about it.

You are absolutely correct but the implication I took was simply that "funds" were the issue as to why Boone chooses not to take on additional students. Clearly that is not the case. Space, maybe at Conner (which should be somewhat relieved now), and perhaps at BCHS, but not anywhere else at this point.

Funds are the issue. Because there are not enough funds to handle the growth. So there is no where to put the students.

Also, if the county raises taxes to help the school district, the state will lower its funding accordingly.

Former Superintendent Blavatt has been lobbing the state to change this policy for several years. Because it short changes the district as far as being able to put money into its capital building fund that it can use to issue bonds for building projects.

Conner still has to use modular classrooms. Cooper will be at or over capacity in 1 to 2 years.
