September 24, 200818 yr http://www.kentucky.com/232/story/534054.html No real big news coming from the delegate meetings. It seems the public/private debate was left alone. It seems the biggest thing was a rule that was put in to allow students who end 1 school year and be ineligible to work in the summer and fall to gain eligibility by January. Also going by the article there was basically a rule wanting to ban any high school basketball coach from coaching an AAU team. Thats all I really got from the article.
September 25, 200818 yr Even though the meeting had not Public-Private debates, trust me, the issues are still there.
October 3, 200818 yr One thing I heard (from an asst. coach) was that they aren't allowing football 7-on-7 in June anymore. "The word" is that the basketball coaches pushed this through so that they could have their players in summer AAU leagues. True?

"The word" is that the basketball coaches pushed this through so that they could have their players in summer AAU leagues. True? I had heard that rumor as well, but that was months ago. Also a big thing they are trying to pass now is if a student has divorced parents he or she can go live with a different parent and be eligible after 1 move. I think this is a very smart move.
October 4, 200818 yr Is there any interest on discussing this issue here? The frenzy seems to have died down (for now), so perhaps this is actually a good time to bring it up. I'm new to this site, maybe everybody's tired of talking about it.
October 4, 200818 yr What is it you are wanting to discuss? Public schools are always going to cry about the private schools but the real issue is in the mirror. The KHSAA isn't made of gold so my guess is they won't be playing tough guy as often on the transfers. It may be easier just to let everyone transfer at will or at least give everyone one free transfer and then have the KHSAA "investigate" any subsequent transfers.
October 13, 200818 yr Public schools are always going to cry about the private schools but the real issue is in the mirror. It is unfortunate that you choose to use the term "cry" when you talk about the public schools responses. I find that most of their arguments are well founded in fact but the privates cannot boast the same well grounded arguments. When kids from Oldham, Trimble, Shelby, Carroll, Spencer, Bullitt, Meade, Nelson, Clark, or Floyd can all go to a Private school in Jefferson County, but cannot legally attend any other school in Jefferson County with moving, then there is a disconnect. I go not farther than that. End of Story! I live in Oldham County and the # of kids that live out here and parents drive them into a Jefferson County Private school is unbelievable. The schools in Oldham County cannot go after kids that live in Jefferson county. Call it "Crying". Call it whatever derogatory term makes you feel confident and comfortable in yourself and your beliefs, but the bottom line is that things are not equal! :fire:
October 13, 200818 yr King, Crying is exactly what it is and I am very confident and comfortable in myself and my beliefs. I appreciate your concern. Now on to business, you are misinformed. The rules are the SAME for everyone. Anyone can go to T and/or X and anyone can go to any of the schools you mentioned. Many times individual schools districts CHOOSE not to accept out of area students but that is a choice. Again, in case anyone forgot, you can't self impose restrictions on your own school district and then complain that others won't do the same. The practice is not only stupid but it is un-American. Your first argument is not founded in fact, it is nothing more than erroneous information commonly peddled by the anti-private school lobby. By all means, bring on the other arguments that are allegedly founded in fact and watch them crash and burn too.

I do not think Boone County schools have a "choice" to not accept out of district students. While yes they choose not to, but it is based on overcrowding issues which are traceable back to inequalities in state funding for their district. The current state funding for education does not account for large increases in student population which handcuffs a district when it comes to overcrowding problems. Why would a school district accept out of district students when they have hundreds of kids attending classes in trailers.
October 14, 200818 yr Your statement makes no sense flatrock. First you state they don't have a choice but then you state yes they choose. For the record everyone, the Boone County school system can accept anyone they want to accept but they choose not to accept students from outside of their district lines.

I guess those mountain schools that cannot get anyone to drive to their school like they can easily do in the urban areas have self-imposed the mountains and the poor driving conditions on themselves. I agree with you when you look at it JUST from an urban standpoint. But for a lot of schools geography prevents open enrollment from being a real option like it is in the urban areas.
October 16, 200818 yr lbbs, If you want to argue the rural point start another thread and I will join in. However, since you agree with me from an urban standpoint you also agree that FootballisKing is dead wrong because he is speaking about an urban area, correct?

Many county schools won't accept out-of-district students because their resources are already strapped and more kids just tightens the belt even more. The privates are able to accept more students because with each student comes a hefty tuition. But either way, for either type of school, there is definitely a choice.

Urban area schools have it easier to compete against each other in an open enrollment setting. To that I would agree.
