I don't understand why they just don't set April 15-30 as the Spring practice window. Then everyone knows when it is and it does not conflict with Basketball. The KHSAA are so anal about dates, I would figure this is what they would do.

The delegates vote on this and the KHSAA enforces the dates that are set.

Not as many football loses to basketball "conditioning" and October 15 practice.

Hey I am with you there. Basketball season is WAY TOO LONG!!!!!

I have always felt that.

It is sad that more kids cannot be three-sport players anymore.

I wonder how many players baseball loses to spring practices?

Spring practice is not mandatory to be on the football team. If you play baseball, you play baseball in the spring and start football practice in July (that is when you probably have to give up some baseball playing time.) So I wouldn't think baseball would lose any players - what kid would give up a baseball season for 10 practices?

But basketball starting Oct 15 requires kids to decide if they want to give up almost a month of basketball practice or not play football.

The proposal was to increase the practice window from 15 days for 10 practices to 20 days. The current bylaw allows for 10 practices during a 15 school day window following your schools elimination from the basketball playoffs. The advantages would have been to allow teams to work around spring break schedules or bad weather. This year my school had to choose between practiceing one week take spring break week off and practice again or hope the two weeks following our spring break we had good weather with no tornados or storms. This is another example of the basketball coaches sticking it to football. Last year basketball got the seperation of football and basketball summer leagues pushed through, effectively killing 7-on-7 in June.

Not so fast, it was expressed yesterday that none of the rules have formally passed the legislative process and the rules we are going by right now are still form 2006-2007.

As for the spring practice proposal, it is a shame that delegates who are football coaches at good basketball schools vote no because they know they will always have good weather. This was a big push by football coaches and the football advisory committee that has failed 2 years in a row. I do not understand the reasoning. This is the only event that coaches do not have a set date for everyone, it really stinks if your basketball teams get beat in the 1st round of district and you have to practice in the snow and nasty weather. All I can say is that basketball is still king when it comes down to it and that is a shame. Football keeps giving in and for what to be voted against everytime we come to the table.

Why was the spring practice window ever tied to the basketaball tourn? Is there any documentation on how these dates were chosen?

Requiring and "It is not required but you are going to fall behind and lose your position if you aren't there" is two different things.

And as you probably read on and found out, I agree with you on 10/15 and basketball season.

I agree with your definition of "not required" - it holds true in every sport.

At my school, we seem to have a lot of players who play spring football without any intention of playing fall football - it is just something they enjoy doing in the spring - I'm sure our coaches would love to have every player that comes out for spring football show up in July. What about other schools - how do your spring football numbers compare to your fall numbers?

OK so, I am to understand that there are limits to Spring Football. Basketball has become a year round sport, with a dad taking the lead and the coach telling players that if they are not in summer ball, he cannot hold their place on the team. Then there is Soccer, another year round sport, same as above. Don't forget baseball, Volleyball, wrestling. The only sport with any REAL rules, is FOOTBALL.

Coaches can blow smoke up peoples legs saying that they want kids to play more than one sport, but reality is what they tell the kids and that is that if you are not at MY conditioning, MY summer ball, MY club matches, then YOU may lose your spot to someone that was there. Manipulating kids is what most of this is about.

The largest revenue sport in most high schools, struggles to get spring practice. Set the dates, Say the month of May, FOR EVERYONE. Then it is clear cut and defined.

KHSAA, never mind, I need to stop there.

Wrong state for baseball to be year round, but I get your point...

Then wouldn't it or shouldn't it be an easy fix? There is Power or Money or both that I am missing somewhere, because it looks like a simple fix....for Spring Practice anyway. The other stuff will NEVER get fixed.

Yea, I think you have a pretty good handle on it.

So there must me Power or Money somewhere that I do not see becasue the Spring Practice issue looks easy to me.

The other stuff will NEVER get fixed.:fight:
