September 7, 200818 yr Many people think Cobb should be the starting QB the rest of this year, and i agree, but where do you think he projects in the future? UK has two highly touted quarter back prospects coming in next year, and Cobb has proved himself a dangerous receiver, and was projected as a DB out of high school if I'm not mistaken.

September 7, 200818 yr Just get the kid on the field..... Something I see with Hartline, Is, He throws it out of bounds more then he does down field. I'm fine with either QB throwing the ball out of bounds. If you don't have an open receiver, throw it at the mascot or the cheer leaders, just don't throw it to the other team.
September 7, 200818 yr As for Cobb starting, I wouldn't mind seeing him get the start against MTSU. We have two quarterbacks that are average passers at best. I'd feel more comfortable with a more athletic, quicker, Cobb. If he can't find anything through the air, let him make something happen with his legs. Hartline is simply too slow to get outside of the pocket and make something happen. There has to be a reason why Hartline started the last two games though. Maybe he out preforms Cobb in practice. Maybe Brooks has issues with playing a Freshman quarterback (as most coaches do). Hartline hasn't done anything to impress anyone yet, but keep in mind, he also hasn't turned the ball over any. That's big. This is a very important year for UK. A 6 win season and a third straight bowl game would help our recruiting out a ton. I feel like Cobb gives us the best chance of winning.
September 7, 200818 yr You could really hear the pain in Coach Brooks' voice last night. He was pleading with the fans to BEAR WITH HIM until HE FIGURES OUT what to do. There are arguments on both sides for sure. Hartline has shown just enough IMO to still warrant some serious consideration. Especially if you consider that Cobb would likely be our 2nd best receiver! Not to mention that Coach Brooks probably doesn't want to "waste" (although it really isn't a complete waste) a year by playing Cobb at QB if he will ultimately play WR or CB. My gut.... Brooks is HOPING AND PRAYING that Hartline steps up bigtime. Not because he doesn't like Randall Cobb but because it is in the PROGRAMS best interest. I must say this though. Tom Leach asked Cobb about nerves and he said something like "there were NO jitters" lol The kid is a very special talent. I can't believe UT fell asleep.
September 7, 200818 yr Young qb's can be NOTORIOUSLY inconsistent. It's a tad early to say Cobb should be the starter the remainder of the year. He looked very good yesterday but we'll just have to see what lies ahead.
September 7, 200818 yr I think the kid earned the starting job, and lets see how he does against MTSU.
September 7, 200818 yr Bottom line is Cobb had two turnovers yesterday, can we please not crown him as the saviour just yet.
September 7, 200818 yr Author I think Cobb will continue to play both QB and Wide Receiver as I think either Morgan Newton or the kid from Texas will play quarterback next year with Cobb as his number one target.
September 7, 200818 yr Bottom line is Cobb had two turnovers yesterday, can we please not crown him as the saviour just yet. Exactly, I was waiting for someone to mention this. He has made two bad decisions that could cost UK in big time games. He has made several athletic plays also against subpar talent in Norfolk St. To my knowledge, Hartline hasn't comitted a TO and has made great decisions. UK fans need to realize that there is a place for both of them on the field.
September 7, 200818 yr Bottom line - the fans need to watch the next two games with some constraint and realize that nothing is necessarily going to be decided. Still, I hate the quick trigger on Hartline, but it is HARD to ignore the dimesion that Cobb creates with his legs. IMO, if they are CLOSE in the passing game, Cobb will get the job.
September 7, 200818 yr As best I could tell, the passing plays that the staff called while Cobb was playing QB were about as simple as it gets. The were mostly rollouts, which is good for him for a few reasons: 1) it gets him out on the edge so that he can easily use his legs, 2) rollouts limit the field of vision, and simplify things for a QB. With a rollout a QB is looking at 2 maybe 3 potential receivers, and probably only has to make one read to decide where to throw the football. One of the few times Cobb sat in the shotgun and attempted to make his progressions on a 4 or 5 receiver route, he stared down his receiver (running a flag route) and by doing so drew the safety over too early and ended up throwing into double coverage and got intercepted. Hartline routinely sat in the pocket and made these reads, and while he wasn't able to push the ball down the field much, he was able to protect the football and not give it away. At this point, neither Hartline or Cobb is the answer by themselves. UK needs Hartline's poise in the pocket and ability to make safe decisions along with Cobb's ability to come in and make plays with his legs to be effective from the QB position. Perhaps the most important aspect to either Hartline and Cobb's potential success is a reliable productive running game. Without the threat to line up and run the football, neither quarterback is capable right now of propelling this offense to the level of productivity required to win games in the SEC.
September 8, 200818 yr I agree that Cobb definately locked in on his man a couple times. Can't do that
