September 1, 200818 yr NY Times Article In Louisville, 7,600 homeless students were enrolled when the term ended in June, up from 7,300 the year before. But Anne Malone, who coordinates efforts to help homeless students, said the figure would be “way up over that this year.” Ms. Malone cited foreclosure statistics from the Metropolitan Housing Coalition in Louisville that about 10 families were evicted every day here. Obviously, Louisville isn't the only community/city facing this, but as I continue to read the BGP pundits say that the economy isn't that bad, I question their insight when almost 8000 kids, in one community alone, are homeless.

September 1, 200818 yr Anyone here have any attempts to solve the problem, or just typical partisan politics finger-pointing? Raise taxes on the wealthy and use the revenue generated to open up some more section 8 housing to destroy neighborhoods.
September 1, 200818 yr How about people that think the same was as you just donate more money to the government rather the taking anyone's money. Soros could get by with a few million less as could the Striesands, Madonnas, Penns and Baldwins of the world. Or could it be that the liberal rich only give up their money if others are forced to along with them?
September 1, 200818 yr Raise taxes on the wealthy and use the revenue generated to open up some more section 8 housing to destroy neighborhoods. Yep....how dare a polititian raise taxes on the CEO of Exxon so more kids can have a home.

And do we thank your Dems for this article from the Murray State News? BTW for what's it worth, my daughter lost her job as did her boyfriend due to the increase of the minimum wage! Amanda Crider Staff writer An increase in minimum wage is usually something to celebrate, but for several Murray State students the increase is coming with a decrease in hours. As of July 24 the federal minimum wage increased from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour. Although the increase may not seem large to some, the University employs hundreds of Federal work-study and University-study students to work across campus. Federal work-study students are allowed to work up to 12 hours a week depending on their package and at the new hourly wage, the University potentially could be paying an additional $436.80 per student over the course of one year. Lori Mitchum, director of financial aid and scholarship, said many departments on campus have to either cut student positions or cut student hours this year to stay within their budgets. "Every office had federal work study slots reduced," Mitchum said. "We don't want to cut students' positions, but we have to." Mitchum said the students are not the only ones suffering from the new changes. "The University is going to have to work around it too because they have less students working the same amount of hours … less students have to cover the same area." Additionally, there is another problem looming in the distance. According to laborlawcenter.com, another minimum wage increase will take affect July 24, 2009, which will increase the federal hourly wage to $7.25. "Students are making a lot more money," Mitchum said. "(Minimum wage) went up 70 cents and we're going to have to experience this change again next year when it goes up again

September 1, 200818 yr Yep....how dare a polititian raise taxes on the CEO of Exxon so more kids can have a home. Just so you know, this was tongue in cheek and related to a post from a week ago. I think we should raise taxes on the wealthy and I definitely support section 8 housing. Check out my posts on the "a good way to destroy a neighborhood" thread.
September 1, 200818 yr Raise taxes on the wealthy and use the revenue generated to open up some more section 8 housing to destroy neighborhoods. Why? The wealthy are entitled to spend their money how they see fit, just like everyone else. I see no reason they should have to pay more taxes because they are successful in life.

September 1, 200818 yr What percentage has tuition gone up each of the past 5 years? I don't know myself, but I seem to remember some bemoaning of the fact that tuition hikes were outrageous. Seems to me that people are hurt worse by tax/tuition HIKES, not cuts.

Check out my posts on the "a good way to destroy a neighborhood" thread. Why not just have the government take every dollar that everyone makes and then redistribute it, wouldn't that be the best for all? Oh, they tried that elsewheres, it is called the failure of communism. They may have lost their homes, but did all these people lose their jobs, maybe they can go rent something. How about extended family members helping? I know several families who lost their homes, but they did not become homeless.
