August 31, 200818 yr There was talk this morning that Gustav may force McCain to have the Republican Convention on Thursday ONLY. They would spend the rest of the time fundraising for those in that area and spending time trying to help in that area. An interesting point was made. This is a year that many do not want to vote Republican. A week of having Republican after Republican speaker might tie McCain to those Republicans in voters minds. But a convention that WOULD ONLY BE him and Palin could actually benefit him rather than hurt him.
August 31, 200818 yr I think that if they spend their time working with the Red Cross for help raise money for the people affected by this new storm....had only 1 day with him and Palin talking...and if they could keep "W" out of the city...they could have a really good convention.

August 31, 200818 yr Why would they need a convention? According to the BGP pundits, the McCain/Palin ticket is a lock already....nothing really to be gained from stretching out this whole thing a week.

Actually, I think they can be hurt by stretching it out a whole week and putting certain Republicans up on the screen. On a side note, they said this morning that Congress has a 12% approval rating. Doesn't look like the Democrats are well-liked in their running of Congress.

Come on Rochmom, and the BGP's Dems haven't said the same thing? I think it would be a great move on both parties part, to send the money that they would spend on Ad's this week, to help out our fellow Americans in need due to this storm!
August 31, 200818 yr I am tempted to criticize McCain for even considering canceling large chunks of the convention but he seems to be on a roll the past two or three weeks, as his campaign decisions have been nearly flawless. I have a feeling that the Michael Moore and former DNC chairman, Don Fowler, celebrated the arrival of Gustav a little too early. I also suspect that Democrats' attempt to exploit the misery of a natural disaster will backfire. Bobby Jindal is getting a lot of free publicity and he is doing a great job keeping the public and media informed so far. Even New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin, seems to be doing a credible job today. If everything goes as smoothly as possible in handling the aftermath of thie hurricane, Democrats who attempt to smear McCain with Katrina are going to look very petty. Jindal is showing why he made McCain's short list.
August 31, 200818 yr Author And I was looking forward to Bush and Cheney's speeches. I would bet the hair on my head that McCain is happy they won't be speaking.
September 1, 200818 yr I would bet the hair on my head that McCain is happy they won't be speaking. That's a pretty safe bet!
September 1, 200818 yr I would bet the hair on my head that McCain is happy they won't be speaking. I have to agree.....................he'd be happy if "w" would stay right there in the oval office and if Cheney went back into his hidey hole for a week.

It would put Democrats in a tight spot, having already had a large-scale convention they wouldn't be able to do much to counter an alternative Republican strategy. I think this is a good idea, though it does have the potential for a major backfire.
September 1, 200818 yr Had this happened last week, the egos of the Dems wouldn't allow them to cancel their time in the spotlight. Not all Dems, but the ones in power are too wrapped up in themselves to put others first.
