I think that it is a pretty good idea, at least on the surface...more so for giving a "cooling down" time, then the background check, as you say that it is available instantly.

Obama is the most extreme gun control candidate that I can remember and yet McCain's advantage on this issue is about half of what Bush's margin over John Kerry was in 2004. I believe that Sarah Palin will help widen that gap. She is potentially the best Second Amendment advocate to run in a national election since Teddy Roosevelt.

Rockmom has posted two good sources to view stats on crime. Keep in mind while you view those stats that the problem isn't the gun, it's the misuse by a criminal. Gun laws and gun control target the wrong people, law abiding citizens. It's always been illegal to shoot someone unless in self defense. It's always been illegal to kill someone unless in self defense. Also keep in mind that if guns were to be banned, only criminals would have access to them. Like I always say, drugs are illegal but we sure have a serious drug abuse problem in this country and people can always get them illegally.
